Since a month ago a pair of Pied Crows have been nesting & breeding near us. They are aggressive and have attempted to attack the smaller of my two cats when he climbs a tree on several occations. They now often circle and make a huge racket and come down quite low. My housemate is quite freaked about this (being a cat lover) and in fear her cat will be injured. We now have to keep the cats indoor during the day which they dislike being outdoor cats. I've even had to block access to the tree so the cats can't climb it and get into their "air space".

Any idea what we can do? Playing crow sounds at them seems to have worsend the situation. (Great tip from a hippie animal behaviourist, not.)

I assume they have chicks in the nest which makes them more aggressive.

They are indigenous so can't be killed and various animal organisations can't help.

Not like I can shoot them with a paintball gun being in a suburb.

Yeah I'm sure many of you will think it's funny but it's less so when it happens to you.

This is what they look like:

Ai ai die witborskraai, maak by biometrics lawaai! :p

Just wait it out, after their chicks leave destroy the nest and keep a sharp eye out for if they attempt to build again.

Yip. What I'm telling the housemate. Wait it out.

Pellet gun, they're silent ;)

The only thing a pellet gun should be used on is non native birds like mynas and rat-like pigeons, native bird populations are dwindling and if we encourage wiping them out in their own habitat which we invaded then we are no better than animals ourselves.

Today its him killing two and tomorrow its his neighbor killing two and his neighbors neighbor and before you know it they are just a legend that we will tell our kids about.

Biometrics her cats need to be kept away from them, crows will defend their chicks avidly and rightly so,while your house mate might think her little cat is a darling its actually a predator and will kill the innocent crows babies for a snack or for fun even so keep her cat away,I'm also a cat person but I've trained my Siamese cat to not kill birds. If she is a cat person then she should learn how to train her cat instead of looking for ways to torment the native birds or get rid of them.

If you were complaining about pigeons or myna's I would have offered to come help you out with a pellet gun also.;)

They're a block away btw.

Aah ok so the cat is not climbing the tree with the nest then?

In that case just wait it out buddy,it was their area before it became yours anyway. The cat will learn not to climb that tree and if they haven't attacked it yet then they probably wont if its smart enough which mosts cats are. They were probably just warning him to back of.

Bio I'm almost certain these crows will not follow through on attacking your cats. They are scavengers but do eat smaller animals like lizards, insects, mice etc. What you saw might have been a scare tactic because of their chicks.

You could opt for erecting a scarecrow in your yard, maybe close to the tree.
There's a guy who manufactures various scarecrows, different designs and sizes 0762464169

There's also this patent @ R1900 from Perkal Gifts

The ScareCrow® motion-activated sprinkler automatically detects cats, dogs, racoons, heron, and more as they approach, and repels them with a short but startling burst of water

Unfortunately ***** will also be hit
