So I'm graduating this year and will have a few months before I need to start working. I've never had such a long period of time where I've not had anything to do and I don't want to sit at home and watch TV the whole day. I want to do something interesting and fun and have a valuable experience to add to my life - like a mini gap year.

I don't have much disposable cash so I can't go on holiday for 3 months. I've thought of maybe doing the winter ski resort work thing. I've also thought of volunteering but don't really know where to start especially if its for several months. Any suggestions and experiences are welcome.

The winter Ski resort idea is perfect. :D

It will get you out of SA and into a totally foreign experience in every way. Literally anything could happen, and that's the sort of thing you need to do right now.

I been doing bugger all for nearly one whole year. I am starting to get ants in the pants. Whatever you do though, try and at least get 2-3 weeks of just vegetating and doing nothing? Some people cannot keep still though. I guess I inherited the lazy gene because days can pass infront of me and suddenly it's a new month. Living in a quiet tiny town doesn't really help though!

But yeah I would do the whole overseas thing but I have no connections. What is the best option to work overseas people? I mean the most reliable. I might consider doing something like that in 2012 if my current plans don't fall into place.

Whatever you do, just do enjoy some of the time off. Celebrate your graduation and smoke a fat joint to just chill the fook out ;)

Get involved with a charity organisation. It gives fulfilment of the heart and a kind of responsibility to strangers.

^^That!! Been there, done that, loads of fun...I did Europe, you're going to have to do Aus though if you want, I don't think there are Europe Contiki's in their winter....if there are any, I don't think it will be so much fun...

I wouldnt intern/job shadow if i was in your shoes, I would probably do some personal enrichment activities (volunteer work is in there)

3-4 months is not long enough to learn a new instrument but you have to start somewhere? maybe learn an instrument?

Me being a computer guy I would love to learn new computing paradigms.

In short i would love to learn or volunteer (and read a few books)

Maybe get an internship/job shadow in an industry that you are interested in ?

I've already got a great job lined up so I don't think its the most beneficial use of my time.

write a book? Nov is NANOWRIMO

After the trauma I've been going through in my final year report, I think its put me off writing for a long time.

I like this idea. Although a bit idealistic, I do want to make a difference - I just want to find something that will take me out of SA, or at least out of Gauteng.

I've looked at Contiki but the longest trips they have are about a month and thats too short, especially for the cash I have to spend.

I had a bad experience trying to learn to play the guitar last year but I've always wanted to learn to play the piano - I could give that a try.

I'm liking the volunteering, but not too sure what it will cost if I do it out of SA. I might have to do a working holiday where I still get paid a little bit. Anyone with any experiences working overseas for gap year?

Try being a volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel. Your timescale is right, you don’t spend any money (airfares only) and you are presented with a microcosm of the world through volunteers of different nationalities. Go through an organised scheme from SA. They will hold your hand right up to delivering you to the kibbutz.

Shamelessly stolen from Reddit
-Spend 2 hours strength and cardio vascular training.

-Spend 2 hours learning another language via Rosetta Stone.

-Spend 2 hours reading anything.

-Spend 1 hour learning about construction. This includes woodworking, plumbing, wiring, concrete, iron work, and home design.

-Spend 1 hour learning how to wisely invest saved money.

-Spend 1 hour doing complex puzzles, riddles, and/or mechanical exercises.

-Spend 1 hour cooking and preparing your healthy meals for the day.

Do this routine for 6 days a week and spend the 7th day doing whatever you want. Eat junk food, watch tv all day, play video games all day, anything you want to indulge the sloth like behavior that will build up while you are active. Sleep 7 hours a night and only drink and do drugs on that 7th day.

After 5 months you will be ready to enter the world bi-lingual, able to design and construct a new home for yourself, able to run a marathon and punch out a giant without breaking a sweat, know how to acquire wealth and build your empire, increased intellect and problem solving skills, and have stern sense of discipline that will be forever lasting.

Congratulations you are on your way to becoming Batman if you want.
