What to do when selling a TV secondhand

Hey!

I'm selling my TV to a friend and will not be purchasing another.

Anybody know what I need to do to not pay a TV license fee anymore or what the steps are when selling a TV secondhand to a private person?

My guess is that you should prepare an affidavit stating that you do not own a TV, have a commissioner of oaths or SAPS certify it, and then fax it (probably multiple times, followed up with multiple phone calls and emails) to the SABC TV License department.

Just send it registered mail and make sure you frame that slip and keep it for the next 20 odd years as that is the time it will take you to convince them that you did cancel your license.

Seriously though: send it registered mail, its the only valid proof you have that it was done. Not sure they will accept a fax etc.. but registered mail they cannot deny. Just make sure you get the address right.

According to law you have to notify the SABC. If you don't they will just hound you through their debt collections department (VVM) for the rest of your life...

SABC license debt does not prescribe after three years, they can hound you for the next 30 years....
 
Notify the SABC, in writing, by fax, on the phone... record every conversation, date and time every piece of correspondence...

You will need it to tell VVM to go and fsck themselves when they start threatening you with legal action.

It is technically not debt, and they can't list you or blacklist you for it...

You can be criminally charged, but I have yet to hear of that happening to anyone.

It does fall under the auspices of the NCR the moment you sign a monthly debit order
 
I actually have the same problem. I called SABC and asked them. You need to provide an affidavid as to why you are no longer eligible to pay TV license.

As said, registered mail only... forget about faxing it, their fax machine either have no paper or the faxes drop into a dustbin as they 'never' get their faxes
