What to do when you are stopped for speeding

Just don't speed.

Just don't speed.

Many innocent people get accused of speeding through faulty equipment, badly trained officers, or just plain corruption. You have a legal right to defend yourself against any accusation. It's not just a simple matter of not speeding.

100% agree, but still rather than get into a argument that could end badly, take the fine and argue it later through the proper channels

By the same token, many people do speed...

Of course, that goes without saying. Only a fool would argue with a cop at the roadside.

I've been stopped 3 times for speeding, in all 3 cases I was let go with a warning.
What you really should do that is not mentioned in the article (apart from speeding of course):

1. Admit you made a mistake
2. Apologize and promise to behave in future

Your face matters too.

Your face matters too.

And be friendly.

I'm sure asking them for a certificate voids any chance of getting away with a warning. I really can't see how the article is titled: "What to do when you are stopped for speeding"

The problem is I've never been pulled over. Just receive a fine in the post.
I wish the traffic cops in Cape Town would get off their fat asses and pull people over and talk to them rather than just hiding behind a bush and sending a ticket in the post.

I've noticed this when visiting Joburg. The metro police in Joburg operate a lot more manned speed traps than in Cape Town. In Cape Town it seems that speed traps are either of the fixed unmanned yellow box type, or if they are manned, they just simply send you a fine in the post instead of physically pulling you over.

If they cannot produce the certificates you ask for, I do not sign for the notice accepting it. They can give it to me unsigned.

What about if they're manning a temporary trap in an area which doesn't look compliant - next to a bridge for example. Seen that several times. If you suspect you may have been a bit over the speed limit can you pull over and go and ask for certificates?

I thought the custom in this country was to say, "Shoo it's hot today, would you like some money for a cold drink?".
