As some of you know, I lost my 40D in a burglary this/last week. Anyway, given the many lenses I lost along with this, I should be getting a decent payout from Insurance to possibly replace with a 50D and maybe replace half the lenses and get 1 or maybe 2 flashes. Alternatively, maybe get the 5D MK II and get less lenses (basically 2 or 3, depending on which ones)?

Obviously the 5D MK II has immensely impressive specs, but is it overkill for the shooting I do? (less than 5% of all my shooting is for commercial purposes). Maybe I should take the 50D and get more high quality lenses?

Oh, and don't bother recommending a Nikon or a Sphony.

Since you're not heavily into Commercial Photography, I'd suggest the 50D just to get a few more lenses....

Sorry to hear dude, happened to me too. I'm keeping an eye on the forums with regards to the 5DmkII - make sure all the issues are resolved. *If* I can bring myself to spend that much on a camera, it will only be in six or so months. I've given the original 5D a lot of consideration, but I'm just so used to little things like the integrated cleaning, and I'm seriously drawn by the higher ISO capability in the newer cameras, that I'd rather get a 50D if I don't want to spend 5DmkII money.

But it's early days, I might just get a 1000D to tide me over (no insurance here, sadly).

Unless you need/want full frame and are willing to pay the price then why not. If you shop right the glass will be the same for both.

Tide . . and couldn't you get a 400D for even less if thats all you're looking for.

I have heard from my dealer that both Nikon and Canon will be increasing their prices this year to the tune of around 10%, couple that with the ever unstable R/$ rate and it makes todays prices seem a little more rosey. So try whatever you can to buy now rather than later.
