Does anyone know if there is a web site (e.g. Dept Agriculture etc) that gives an indication of what plants are suited for the different parts of SA?

Thanks

Thanks ponder :)

I should have mentioned this in my OP: I was specifically trying to get info on fruit and veg.

Plant what you will and see what survives ........... most of SA is similar enough in spring/summer surely?

Not really :)

The subtropical areas differ a lot from e.g. the Northern Cape.

It is for a business and they do not have enough funds to enable them the luxury of a hit and miss technique :)

They don't differ enough to have a major impact on stuff ......... depends on exactly what fruit and veg I suppose.

Not wanting to fight with you, but I beg to differ.

Some fruit and veg cannot survive frost, for example. Others cannot tolerate excessive heat.

Meh, I'm trying to get across that it depends if it's generic fruit and veg or region specific stuff like Lichi's and Mango's - won't / don't grow in Transvaal ...... Peach Tree's - won't / don't grow in KZN ..... Grapes won't / don't grow outside of the Cape .... etc etc.

Sure, I see what you mean.

I did find a SADC Sowing Guide in the meantime, that seems to indicate more or less what veg to sow where in SA :)

now I'll need a link ....... coz I'm all interested to see what grows / doesn't grow where :o

Thanks Blu, it's bookmarked for when spring rolls around and I start my veggie patch :)

Yip, that would definately have helped. Oh well, if you ever need the 'other' type of plants...

EDIT:
http://www.safruitfarms.com/ covers fruit

As far as I know most veggies will grow across the country, some just better than others.

Thing is that if these people don't know what grows where then they are in for a battle as it's not as simply as sowing some seeds in the soil. Farming has lots of variables that influence your outcome like weather, pests, disease etc
