I am about to signup but not sure which ADSL line speed is ok.
I will be doing alot of browsing, and skype and generally working online.
Once i have a line e.g. 512k can i easily (and cheaply) upgrade?

Also can i get a telkom ADSL line on month to month basis or do I have to take a 24 month contract?
I will be using 2 laptops online , do I need the Telkom Wireless Gateway or are other wireless modems cheaper?

wireless is slow

get a router not a wrieless router

get 512 adsl

and an allyoucaneat.co.za 680 30 gig account so you can get lotsa porno's

dont sign a contract

-192 is ok for BF2 online and slow downloading.
-384 is ok for 2 players at the same time BF2'ing and quick downloading.
-512 is just a waste of money.
-1024 is cool for hosting a BF2 server where 8 peeps can play at the same time, and superfast local downloads. International downloads behave like 384 downloads.

- Work means you'll be doing VPN / Remote Desktop and you need low latency for that. Try to stay away form wireless anything then.

- You can upgrade tro 1024 for free, but a 1024 line costs a fortune. Why don't you start on 384 and then upgrade if it's not meeting your requirements ? Yoyu can go from 192->384->512->1024 for free. It's when you want to downgrade that teklom ripps you a new ... erk ... charges you.

- You can go month to month will all of the ISP's including telkom ... Telkom is the best value for money ISP out there right now ... sadly.

- You wanna go wireless ... best to buy a wireless router with 150m range and 2 areals - 2 aeriels means they are doing distance error correction which helps a lot. But ... any one will do really, they all have the same problems. Wall ? What wall ... it's like 2 bricks thick ... what do you mean you cannot transmit throught this particular wall ? Rediculous :p ! Wireless is luck of the draw really. Oh .. you can buy any wireless router that is ICASA approved. Note that not all wireless routers support ADSL, make sure you know what you're getting.

I use a super cheap basic rubbish ADSL modem and then switches and routers and stuff from there. The choice is yours.

Yeah, the upgrade costs nothing but a downgrade costs R250 I think.

If you're not into games playing, I'd reccomend a 5GB account from WebAfrica (www.webafrica.co.za - R342/month) although it might be too little if you do heavy VoIP.

All ISP's do month-to-month contracts if you buy your OWN router (don't buy Telkom router if you don't want to be in a 24-month contract)
 
so wireless is better than plugging into a router via network cable?

naaa i wouldnt go wireless if you want consistant speed and not luck of the draw type stuff

plus its better for your brain cells

i suggest you go for the 192K line to start off with. if you want faster, then simply upgrade. 192K is still quite fast (in SA terms).

you might even get lucky and telkom will give you a 512K line while charging for a 192K :D :D :D - happens to alot of ppl

good idea to start with 384h. Many users report 512k speeds on these lines, making it the most cost-effective solution on there as 1024 rarely run significantly faster than 512 in straight line...

Yes, there is no benefit to signing a contract with telkom but that should not come as a suprise! The modem u get with it is sh1te. My mate has one. And for the prices u can pick up modems for nowadays to get tied into a contract just for that is plain ridiculous!

Can this be true ? I can sign up for 192K line and possibly get speeds above its capabilities?

Anyone know the range on the telkom wifi modem/router?

yes i am on a 192k line. always get in excess of 192 speeds, but less than 384.

384 apparently gets close to 512 very often so i would vote for that one. Its only like 80 bucks more than 192...

As long as you set up your security settings on the router sufficiently.

Ranges depend on physical obstacles, 20-30 metres without any, generally going through more than two brick walls and you're kaput

D-Link DSL-G604T ADSLmodem / Wireless Router, is also a good unit.

I have been told that one cannot have 2 VPN sessions going at once with the telkom offering, is this true?

I will be getting adsl and both my husband and I need to connect to our offices at the same time by VPN and we are about to go for the IS business package, are we on the right track? Thanks
