What to study

Wow u guys thanx 4 all that insightful advice! This is what makes this forum different to any other pc forum... U get real world info and ppl who can relate to u.

@norulez you really hit the nail on the head there. I really want to do IT coz I enjoy it. It sure won't be a bed of roses but at least I'l be doing what I want.

Is it a good idea to get into this field as the market is saturated with graduates, or so I'm told?

About this point, I started working this year. Interviewed at 5 places, got 3 offers and 2 places I had to still go for final interviews but skipped them as I already signed a contract. Found it quite easy to get a job.

What I studied:

BSc Computer Science Honours (very mathematical degree based on algorithms and analysis of algorithms for efficiency).

What I do:

I am on a Grad program as a programmer working on problems coming up with stable, and efficient solutions. Will let my managers decide how good my solutions are! PM me if u want a few more details about applications etc.

@OP, you should do some serious thinking before you do anything. first you want to drop engineering to study computer science while you say that you're into sales and assembly. that's pretty far from chip design et al etc.

This is not true

A BSc is a BSc. Unisa's BSc is a 'normal' 3 year equivalent degree course.

Unisa do offer diploma courses as well, but they aren't called degrees.

Refer to the unisa website for more info www.unisa.ac.za

Sorry, was referring to one of the NDip courses they offered where you could go on a year further for a degree. With the new curriculum that has been dropped and it's now only a NDip.

There is still the BSc CS, but it's only software, not hardware (obviously).

@Tco21 I didn't say I am going to do computer science, I'm here to find out what I should study. But I will do some serious thinking:)
