What was David Bullard thinking?

I imagine he's knee jerking to something in particular. He should stick to reviewing cars.

Some of the best news these days comes off of blogs, simply because they are uncensored. If it infringes the law then prosecute them by all means, but he's just sour because some "pimply faced nerd" is a better journo than he is.
 
He's a journalist, so obviously he's protecting his occupation - currently under threat from online news. Also many blogs are of poor quality research and logic. Of course a seasoned journo will take a swipe at it.
 
I wonder if David Bullard would grace us with a comment? Perhaps in the next issue of paper?
 
Bullard thinks he is original and the fact is have you seen him on that car program on SABC3?

He claims to be original in his bloggers article. But on TV he is quite cleary reading off lines from the Toyota press release for the new hi-lux. How much did they pay you for that opinion bullard, did it take you long to learn your lines?

Not quite relevant to the topic, but true for most SA TV shows. Always trying to sell something - just look at the soaps.
 
Most blog sites are the air guitars of journalism. They’re cobbled together by people who wouldn’t stand a hope in hell of getting a job in journalism, mainly because they have very little to say. It’s rather sad how many people think the tedious minutiae of their lives will be of any interest to anyone else.

Firstly Bullard, why are you reading them and secondly, why do you bother writing about them? Does your personal rant qualify as journalism just because you have been given a newspaper column and get paid for it? Is it just because an opinion is in print with the journalist's name attached that it should automatically be respected?

Journalists like Bullard would like us to believe that they have the monopoly on opinion. I find the readers letters section of many local newspapers far more interesting than the columnists and editorials. If anything, that is a sad indictment on the quality of opinion passed off as journalism that we get fed on a daily basis. Yet I have a choice - read it or leave it and more often than not, I leave it.

Bullard should have mentioned the many respected bloggers with large followings whose opinions get absorbed into mainstream thinking. I would hazard a guess that these blogs are read by serious journalists who want to monitor the pulse of public opinion. The Internet is revolutionary in that it allows the masses to have their say. Bullard most probably feels threatened by this and his rant could be a rear-guard effort to save his column from extinction.

True! Many a good journo in large print and visual media have blogs!
 
I don't get it. Blogs exist only in cyberspace and there are no pop-up ads for k@k blogs. So if you don't search for the blogs they won't irritate you. You don't even have to see a blog if you don't want to. Nobody is being bombarded by blogs, they're just there in cyberspace as data. If you don't like blogs, don't go to them!

At least in these video clips, he has cleared up the difference between a columnist who doesn't have to check his facts and a journalist who does. Basically, he has admitted that a newspaper columnist is a print bloggist who gets paid whilst a web bloggist doesn't.

Does that make his article in The Sunday Times any less drivel than the bloggists he is complaining about? He seems to be reveling in the controversy that he has fuelled and he will gladly be accepting drinks from his plaudits.

Stirring up controversy with his tongue-in-cheek style is what Bullard is all about. He has stepped on many toes in the past because he has been given license to write whatever he likes. Bloggists have that same license. Bullard, however, boasts that his column works better at getting attention. This kind of lumps him with other notable attention seekers - the likes of Paris Hilton and Britiney Spears.

I don't always read his columns but I admit that at times Bullard can be quite funny. Satire is the use of irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity. If it isn't applied cleverly, however, it can show up the satirist for being as stupid as those he is attacking. I doubt for a second though, that Bullard gives a jot and is laughing all the way to the bank.

Bloggers generate traffic which often generates income. As soon as I see those magic words Google AdSense I begin to question if the blogger's intentions are completely altruistic.
