56kb/s on the humble home desktop. No mesh or home coverage in WiFi. Just one point of access - Telkom.

And I can never forget the purr of the start up, FTW.

When I was a Kid, we first had BelTel, with a Telkom provided Minitel style box (a all in one dumb terminal) and can still remember the chat rooms on FROGG, before moving to dial-up using a US Robotics modem.
As an adult living on my own, I had to use my phone for tethering for a long time until I eventually got 512K ADSL installed.

Most of my internet browsing and Linux ISO downloads were done at work or going to LANs, until ADSL became standard in my area.
Now we have Fibre.
 
When I was a child, we had dialup, but my first home internet in my own place, was ADSL. 384kbps :D

This was only a bit later.
36.6k, a white modem with the same design was the standard for a long time.
When SA eventually got the opportunity to upgrade to 56.6kb, it was a bit disappointing. The telkom lines was in dismal shape. Major issue stems from cost cutting shortcuts that was taken. ie installing O+4 line splitters. It takes a single line, and modulates the crap out of it so that 4 homes can use a single copper pair from the exchange. Don't be too fast to blame telkom though. This practice started when the post office was in charge of phones.
I know all this since I had the worst job anyone could ask for in the mid 90's
Internet Help desk agent. Ok maybe not the worst job. At least on par with toilette scrubbers. Got paid the same as toilette scrubbers, and had to deal other folk's đź’©
 
Terrible dailup in my teens. Even worse than normal 56k dialup. I can't recall the speed.

Telkom upgraded us from old switchboard phones (the ones where you first rang a operator) to a wirelessly connected line that worked via a tower on a hill nearby.

It disconnected every couple of minutes.
We had an option form Telkom where we could phone out unlimited/set ammout of minutes at night for a single price per call. But it disconnecting made it expensive to use.

I think the ISP could have been Isat at first and @lantic later. But Isat could have been at work later on. I don't remember.

When I moved out, we had adsl in the commune and eventually I got a 3g modem.
It was around then when I started lurking on myadsl.

Dial up, with some weird store and forward Usenet stuff going.
 
ISDN at home.
My grams had a 56K dialup modem from Duxbury (still remember the color, it was that transparent blue) until around probably, I'd say, 2007-2008, before moving over to ADSL, and then on to a business LTE router. They lived in a rural area, so adoption to faster internet was slow.

She used hers for business, emails and internet banking. She had WinXP with Internet Explorer and Ms Outlook... Oh man, those were the days, hearing that modem screech... You wouldn't dare to pick up the phone during that time...
 
Dial up, then ADSL, then a MTN dongle, then back to ADSL, then finally fiber.
 
US-Robotics was the way to go.
The Honking and Toking while establishing communication. I can still here this.
