What price will you be happy with for an ADSL connection? I was just wondering because this forum could last for ever... which is a bad thing. We complain about the price (and we have every right to) but what price will make us stop from coming here.

For me at the moment

1 Meg line, 30 gig cap = R350,00 (This includes line rental and ISP costs).

I would be happy with that.

I can settle for that - or maybe a 50Gig cap will be better - and then R300pm for a 512k (50Gig) service

I agree, R300 is a fair price point, But I'd rather have 4-8Mbps connection and a 30Gb cap. There shouldbe premium and budget packs as well
R150 = 512kbps / 10gb
R500 = 8Mbps 50-75Gbps

1 Mbit/s speed, 30GB soft usage cap, R300p/m (ALL-INCLUSIVE) would be "reasonable" IMO, although not great (i.e. it sounds great only because our expectations are so low, but not when compared to countries with competitive markets).

I'd be happy to pay R500 all inclusive for a 1meg line and 30gig cap. I think that's more than reasonable for a 3rd world country...

8mbit-50mbit uncapped for R400/pm or lower.

actualy I was just thinking now by the time we have that the world will have moved on again so i'll say this. I'll be satisfied when we compare within a ratio of 10-15% to the UK's best packages.

Suggested entry level package:
512K / 60 Gig cap - R125

I think one of the most important areas is the entry level. South Africa needs more people online and for this we need to lower the barrier to entry significantly.

My high end package:
4mbps / uncapped - R450

Just remember, as Bwana v5 pointed out, what might be sufficient for us now in terms of bandwidth requirements is probably going to be insuffucient in a few years. So we should aim high now to allow for more bandwidth intensive services in future (eg. legal movie downloads, high def streaming tv, etc).

I'd just like to make a point, if I may. With true broadband you should be able to do several different things at once without noticing one application slow down the others because of using to much bandwidth. So for example, you should be able to be downloading something from iTunes, watching streaming CNN news, and chatting on Skype all without noticing any lag. I doubt 512 will be sufficient for that. A lot of people use 1.5 mbps as the minimum speed that should be called broadband and even that only allows for 1 good quality video stream. We should be pushing for 8mbps+ if we really want broadband we can use to the max.

I agree Fergus.

The existing infrastructure should handle 8Mbps.

A mate in Aus is busy getting ADSL2 (12Mbps) installed at his place. In all honesty, that's where the world is about to go, if we want to catch up we should definitely be looking at 8Mbps+

Yes. I'd even pay R500 for 512k/30GB and be grateful for it. Never ever going to happen though.

What would make me happy....

1. Proper free market competition
2. Open up SAT-3 / 'the undersea cable' to all providers
3. ICASA doing what they are supposed to do, de-regulating for better competition.
4. Unbundle the local loop.
5. The government getting of their collective asses and implementing affordable communication to all.

That's about it for now....if this happens price will come down.

I agree. Let us hope this new year will bring some happiness to our hearts.

R250.00/pm buys you that in a decent country like Canada.

Why are we talking R500.00 for 512k in South Africa? We should not be paying more then R125.00 flat rate for unlimited, unshapped 512k.

ADSL is something of the past. Like I have seen before "ADSL 24/7 is dial up in a different guise" or something to that effect.

Things that make you go hmmmmm :D

The interesting thing is if companies could they probably would offer those speeds just so they can get an edge over their competition. (HAHA "their competition" <- laugh; and also the problem...)

Ive got to agree. We tend to forget that ADSL should be providing an affordable alternative for internet access to the masses.

As a high-end user id even be willing to pay abit more for an uncapped service at a true bradband speed as long its a bit less than the R570 im paying for the 192 k 10 gig s ive got now.

Guys... You need to differentiate between LOCAL and INTERNATIONAL bandwidth!!!!

I am happy to pay R50-R70 per GB for International bandwidth...

BUT: I am only happy to pay R1 per GB for Local bandwidth!!!!!

Think about it: 5GB Int (5 X R50) + 100GB Local (100 X R1) = R350 per month.

If I had that... then Telkom could hardcap me... But I need to option to reload bandwidth.

sounds perfect
512 line 30gb
350 zar, all in "hook line and sinker" and maybe a ski boat:)
but only for durbanites, i mean u wouldnt use one in Jozie .............
