Hi there,

I recently got a job around Johannesburg area. I will be staying in Sandton. I need advice as to what wireless option to go for. I NEED broadband.

My requirements are:

1) 1.5 to 2gigs bandwidth
2) 100% uptime from 7pm to 11pm.

My laptop has a Wireless Network card. I have access to a wireless router that I can take with me but that will just be a waste of time since I won't be have a telephone line.

So far I have seen

1) Iburst Wireless 2 GIG R198 a month with no Hardware (So as far as I understand this would only work if I have access to an iburst wireless hot spot in the area that i'm living. Someone please confirm this. Also what speeds would this be?)

2) Iburst WiMax (I have been to the iburst website and cannot find pricing on this.. can someone please provide me with information this if at all possible)

3) Screamer WiMax (170 a month seems alright BUT I cannot afford to fork out the extra cash for the Hardware I think it's an extra 279 or something a month)

What other options do I have?

Only found this. Not available through website, but with some advanced searching on website...

Get Vodacom 3G rather if you have to go wireless.

I don't know anything about Screamer, but my advice to you based on personal experience and tons of threads here (read them if you are interested) is to stay far, far away from iBurst.

Also read the Neotel threads.

Thanks for the replies,

[Neotel www.neotel.co.za

Checkout the Neoflex packages.

Neotels Neoflex package looks viable but they only start from 5gigs and up for R499 I don't need that much bandwidth.. if I could pay 200 for 2gigs that would be perfect

Those prices are ridiculous for my needs..

3G The cheapest bang for buck is MyGig Two 2048 R 389.00 which is still quite expensive. I might as well go for Neotells 5gig Neoflex for R110 more.

LicKWiD_IcE,

The Iburst Wireless 2 is a good option but you need hardware which you can obtain with a fixed term contract over 24 months. The benefit is that you get to pay for your modem in monthly installments. Another alternative is to buy a second hand modem at a lower cost.

iBurst also has the ability to use Prepaid as another alternative.

iburst WiMax is currently used mostly by business as there hasn't yet been a mobility spectrum allocation from ICASA.

iBurst does not provide wifi services that leverage built-in adapters on a laptop.

Iburst Wireless throughput varies on your signal strength, mostly from 300 Kb/s and up to 1 Mb/s. In a weak signal strength area it is possible to use an omni to improve the throughput.

kilobitsperyear,
I have installed an Argus server at home http://argus.tcp4me.com/ This server is connected to a Linksys WRT54GL (using tomato) and attached to a UTD with an omni. Here are the results since 1 January 2010:

Um, you by any chance work for iBust Ronald?

Do NOT sign a 24 month contract!

Rather buy the modem 2nd hand, if you have a good signal in your area.

Alot can happen in 2 years, you don't want to be stuck with iBurst for the next 2 years.

Agreed with Gekco Stay Away or u will be sorry, iburst service is going down the crapper

Okay i've read all the posts.. very confused..

Rooigevaar, thanks for your input.. will do a little more research before I consider Iburst.

Moggie, I was not aware that telkom even offer 3g. will read up on that now and post feed back later =)

if you gonna take iburst, dont sign a contract, there admin SUCKS! (learn from my mistake!)
there Wifi service is terible at best and limited to few hotspots
the wimax service is for businesses only and requires hardware.
theire wireless service for me has been good speeds of 800Kbps average, slowest i ever got was abot 300Kbps (from what i read im bloody luuky), but i will keep strseesing there billing suckc and have f-upped my account almost every month!

as to how to set up iburst to your wifi router to iburst modem its pretty easy, most routers connect to thier desktop modem (the big one) and its pretty easy to set up, the router does the "dialling out" and connect your PC with wireless , This is how i connected with my liksys router, and got one of my buddies netgaer routers to work,
The desktop modem costs about 2K or you can do what i did and take it over 24 months, dont do that like i said b4 billing is a nightmare!

Hi guys,

Okay I have finally made my decision.. I have opted for 3G (Vodacom) I am going to use the MyGig (1GB) Bundle for 289. I am having a look at telkoms 3G it looks descent. Does anybody know if I can use my Huawei E272 USB Modem and just get a telkom sim card?

From personal experience I would avoid both Neotel and Iburst as neither company has staff that seem to know what the internet is or how it works but they sure have accountants who seem to like to take your money even if your not using their service anymore!
