As the thread title says. Assume you have no bond, no car repayments and no debt to service. You have enough monthly income to live comfortably yet sensibly. Hence the million ZAR is spare but not to be spent. Im talking making it grow.

Right now I would spend 500k on SBPP (Standard Bank Prefs), and then spend 100k each on AECI, AngloPlats, FirstRand, Shoprite and Mr Price.

When economic prospects look better you can sell the prefs and buy something with more capital growth. The prefs pay tax-free dividends at 70% of prime.

Just an opinion.

SSF (Single Stock Futures). That's if you have money that you don't necessarily expect back. (like in this case). Very risky with very (possible) high returns.

Take a binary position(ie if it works u makes load,if not you lose ) with a decent stop with a SSF.

The OP didn't specify that he had huge brass balls :D

Then you can't go too far wrong with what I suggested. But do it slowly over time and do some research.

The SBPP closed at 104.6 today, but they go ex dividend after tomorrow, and the price should drop to about 101.1

Being a very average person who has a long term secure outlook, I would invest it in a property in an area that is conducive to good and sustained property value growth. In my case here in the Cape, I would invest in a small residential lock-up property in the Stellenbosch area.

Reasons:

* Paul Roos Gymnasium
* Rhenish Girls' High School
* Bloemhof High School
* Stellenbosch High School
* Cloetesville High School
* Kayamandi Secondary School
* Luckhoff Secondary School
* Af Louw Primary School
* Rhenish Primary School
* Bruckner De Villiers Primary School
* Cloetesville Primary School
* Devonvallei Primary School
* Eikestad Primary School
* Idasvallei Primary School
* Ikaya Primary School
* JJ Rhode Primary School
* Koelenhof Primary School
* Lynedoch Primary School
* Rietenbosch Primary School

- University of Stellenbosch 25 000 students
- Stellenbosch College

Stellenbosch is one area in South Africa where a residential property investment always grows in value.

This little property will ensure you a monthly income for the rest of your life, a little pension fund or if you have a pension fund, why not kit it out with the change and make it a second luxury pad for yourself and friends in Cape Town. - become a jet setter :)

it will grow, but not overnight lol

I didnt and I dont (for the purpose of this). Leave the hardcore stuff out. Waaaay over my head.

LOL :D so you really have R1m laying around? I know that we're working on "assumptions" here, but I was wondering... :p

Open a brothel with myself a 100% owner/shareholder and the only customer.

i would buy a property to rent as my first thought. though now that i think about the income and capital gains tax issues I may think elsewhere. but i think that may be an easier solution, say a 1 bed in Sandton looking to rent it out to a young professional, than actually trying to pick stocks.

Assume 3 properties already in portfolio although buying a run down property and doing it up to sell for profit or buying vacant land and building a dwelling to sell as profit is not out the question. What Im trying to find are some ideas that might not be 'run of the mill' ones like funds and stocks.

I could do that for free :D

If I had a Million I would start a small venture probably like a owner run store in a shopping mall as the million should be enough to secure a lease, stock, and pay for a small staff count for the first few months and see where it goes ;)
