What's in my roof?

I moved recently. There are some kind of insects in my roof. Hopefully not a big rat.

There is stuff falling from my ceiling through the gaps on the sides of my braai room. Where the edges don't make contact with the wall. The droppings are really hard, small and black. Can't break them with my fingers.

As I'm typing this this *** is falling. Last night what looks to me like cockroach legs fell as well. So it appears they having a party up there.

Has anybody seen something like this before. What animal does those rock hard droppings belong to? Don't say they eggs.

What does it taste like? If it is very salty it could be cockroach due to their digestive system.

I would have gone on a tactical assault. I can't sleep till they're dead. Looks like roach droppings.

Looks like mice droppings to me (based on the hard to scale pics :) ). Had the same issue recently. Bought poison pellets, threw them around in the roof space. Problem gone. For a couple weeks after we found evidence of my suspicion, the occasional dead mouse in the garage and the yard.

Could even be rats, they would eat roaches as well.

Yip. Depending on the size of those droppings. Were it a bunch of rats though, they'd make such a ruckus that the only option would be dastardly rats. Mice are light of foot, sneaky little buggers

The droppings are rock hard though. Mice droppings aren't that hard. They are longer as well.

Depends on the age of the droppings. I also found nothing but hard droppings and never a fresh one. Seems the mice do housekeeping, ridding the area of old droppings

As I am no expert on these things, I am just going to smile at the two of you. To make this sort of comment; the thought flashed through my mind of two experts feeling the different excrement, smelling it and taking a small nibble... and then ah yes, it's definitely roach. Mice are a little more chewy. :)

:D

Just going on my terrible experience with the little devils. Just for the record-at no point did I taste the droppings - can't speak for my wife though.

The cockroaches love the dark. You will hear them move around only when it's dark.
