Whats the best package?

Okay, I've been looking into the different package options offered by iBurst. Given my budget/download requirements the G1 option seems to be the best one to go for. The best offer, for the price is the 24 month subscription for R389, excluding the modem, so thats an upfront cost of an additional R1820. I looked at the option of paying R579 with the modem included but means you pay more than twice the cost of that unit had you bought it at the beginning.

The only risk I can see with buying the modem upfront is if iBurst go bust you're left with a modem you cant use whereas with a month to month contract you've only paid for the x number of months you had the unit, quite extortionately at that!

What are your thoughts?

Afiak, the laptop modem is the weakest of the lot. Fork out the extra $$ and get the desktop one for R2190. I don't do contracts either.

Weak as in? Signal strength? I'm looking at buying one of those omnidirectional antannae thingamajigs as the PC is far away from any window.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's to do with the sending strength of the laptop modem. Get someone to come and test first. They will use come with a laptop. That will give you a worst case scenario. My signal was tested this way, on my desk with laptop modem...440kbps. Bought desktop modem, moved it to a shelf (1.5m higher) and averaged above 800kbps. Wrong side of the house.

Hmm, interesting, I've got access to the usb modem and i'm quite happy with its speeds. I would be interested to know if the modem does make a difference. Did you have the notebook antennae?

The laptop and USB modems have no antenna, and therefore the signal recieved by them is weaker than the desktop modem's. If you look at the UTD, it has a huge built in antenna to the left, which makes signal strength so much better.

As for the package, it depends on what you want to do. For downloading mp3's, streaming videos etc I'd recommend the G3 or G6 package.

My work has recently purchased the USB modem with the antenna and I must admit I don't see much difference in the speed/signal strength. Does that UTTracker software work with the USB modem?

I'd like to keep my costs sub R500.

Well with the antenna it sould all work out fine, as te antenna will then recieve your signal and your UTx is left out of the equation.

Uttracestart can apparently work fine with the USB modem, so try that out for hep with setting up your signal and with a real signal reading.

Let's just say I have 2 iburst modems. I use the Laptop modem when I'm on the go, and the desktop modem at home. I receive much better speeds with the UTD since it is at a fixed position. Have you tried placing the UTD so that it receives the best signal?
