My ranking is based on the distribution of NRF rated staff (for CS and Math, since they often go together), and the overall world university rankings (Times and QS).

Mine is based on the fact that I went to NMMU and didn't turn out half bad. My boss might disagree :p

For the average guy it probably doesn't matter where you go really.

You're right here - for the most part, it's about how good the lecturer is at teaching the syllabus. Often the best teachers, aren't the best researchers. I would say that for post-grad, one should try get into a department with the best research profile though.
