Whats the fastest synching ADSL modem out?

Just got my D-Link 2500u delivered.

Synching at 3 meg, not losing any packets.

Fantastic value for money.

Awesomeness =) Keep us updated about your experience and comparison... would be nice to get a stickied thread here with DSL modem comparisons... with proper feedback, it wont be long before we know what modems are the best, and best value for money

Pure awesomeness.

I'd just like to point out that I am getting these speeds, no packet loss, no disconnects on a line with:
SNR Margin (dB): 5.4 12.0
Attenuation (dB): 63.5 31.5

Holding torrents at 350kB/s... never in the 14 years I have lived here have I had such fast Internet.

WOW. I haven't' seen someone with 3Mbps and such a bad line attenuation in quite a while!
I'd actually suggest that you downgrade your speed to 2Mbps if the D-Link can't maintain a stable connection.

I can't believe the router makes such a difference

Looks like those 2500u's are going to sell like hot cakes now :)

Would I be correct in saying the D-Link 2640u is the same as the 2500u, the 2640u just has wireless and 4 ports where the 2500u only has 1 port and no wireless?

A friend of mine has the 2640u, and yeah it seems to perform just as well, but has the extra wireless and 4 LAN ports. I'd personally rather go for a 2500u and then use like a Linksys WRT54G/WRT300N with dd-wrt/tomato firmware (linux), for the wireless/switch complement. If the DSL modem gets hit by lightning or something, then the wireless router might still be spared and you just replace the Dlink for ~R200

With a good DSL filter (not sure if you're using one already) you could even improve that noise margin more, and potentially increase your sync/stability further. Ordinary filters like the ones Telkom provides only cut the DSL frequencies out of the voice line, but don't cut out other frequencies for the DSL portion. I managed to find a decent filter somewhere that does filter for the DSL line, and it helped stabilize my noise margin quite significantly and drops were less frequent.

I've found a filter which looks to be better than the one I'm using, and I'd like to import around 3-5 of them for myself: http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=54 (you can't buy them anywhere except the UK)... I contacted them via e-mail and they don't ship to South Africa - but apparently they're the best filters on the market [just read the reviews there or do a google search for XF-1e]... so I'm trying to make a plan to organize someone from the U.K. to send a few down, but that's proving to be a daunting task - if anyone is going to the U.K. soon and can bring them down for us, plz help XD... and if anyone wants one, say so here - maybe if there's enough demand we can get a bulk order through and distribute them from here or something :)
The only issue is that U.K. filters usually use the outer pair of an RJ11 jack for DSL, so we'd need to make converters for them to work on SA lines (I've done it before though with a filter which came with my Netgear router that didn't work on my line out of the box - it's easy to do & works flawlessly)
These guys could ship it to South Africa: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=1652, but shipping alone costs 30 GBP (R329), so I've avoided that for now
And these guys offer good bulk pricing, but don't ship to SA: http://www.adsl-filters.co.uk/bulka.html

Would I be able to use the Telkom Mega 100WR2 linked with the 2500u by cat 5 cable, thus giving me the wireless of the mega 100 and the modem of the 2500u?
I can hardly sync at 2Mbps,
US Margin 12
DS Margin 12
DS Line Attenuation 40
US Line Attenuation 23

Yip, shouldn't be a problem to do that. I guess it all depends on whether that router bridges its wireless connection or not

By my line stats would someone be able so tell if 4Mbps should be possible?

With your attennuation, for sure - with your noise margins: no ways. Perhaps you should look into my proposed filter import strategy :) Other than that, it might be a good idea to make sure that nothing in your home is contributing/causing that low noise margin (fax machines etc), and if that fails, then get Telkom out to rewire the last portion of cable outside your house to twisted pair wire as that would insulate against the noise. If your noise margin goes up even by about 5 dB you should be able to get 4Mbps no problem

I just ordered the 2500u, I will comment when I receive it and get my ISP to sync me at 4Mbps instead of 2Mbps.

Cool stuff.

Just a small technical issue with your sentence: the ADSL isn't synchronizing with the ISP. It is synchronizing with Telkom's DSLAM.
Once the ADSL modem established a connection with the DSLAM, then it will make a PPPoE connection to the ISP ;)

Yes, but my ISP had to lower my speed on their side for me to get a stable connection, thus why I have to phone them to remove the limitation and bump me back up to full 4Mbps speed.

Can anyone Please helps me, I want to test my ADSL line at home and get some stats on it so see if it performing to its potential.
I have a Billion 400G router and a 4mb Line with Telkom as my ISP.
is there a website i can go to except speedtest.net
OR
Software that i can download to run the tests
