Hi,

Looking for some advice and possibly some guidance.

  • I have a Telkom 2mb uncapped line running at home .
  • Telkom is my ISP
  • Download speed measured on speediest.net says download speed is roughly 1.6mb/s
  • My line is healthy without issues
  • My actual download speed is stupidly slow I wait ages to buffer YouTube etc..I’m talking 20min for a 3min video.
  • I don't download torrents
  • If I download 5gigs a month I would say that that would be a very high estimate.

A friend of mine who stay down the road literally 200 meters away has exactly the same connection and ISP and his speeds are triple that of mine.

Is the fault a congested exchange? If so how do I change?
Would switching ISP's to say MWeb help at all?

Just brab a couple test accounts from Afrihost or Web Africa to test first.

How is your browsing? And this is probably a long shot but have you tried using wired on maybe a different device?

Looks like a latency issue but run a speedtest with other ISP accounts and a tracert. That will give you some answers.

Somethings you could do -
1 Get another ISP as backup and check how that goes - I cannot do torrents on Telkom at all - no speed! If your other ISP is quicker, it is a Telkom problem with your account. My other ISP does torrents no problem for example.
2 Check with Telkom that your line has been upgraded to 2meg - often a setting needs changing.
3 Delete your connection and recreate another connection - this solves errors beginning with "7" for example.
4 Reset your router/modem

I have got a mweb test account, seems to be a bit quicker. I will test for the next couple of days and then make a decision.

Thanks for the advice.

Been testing Mweb for a couple days and it is running a lot quicker and much more stable, so I will be switching over.
