What's the point of additional local-only data?

OK, I'm confused. Either I need access to International websites or I don't. If I don't, then the amount of blended data on my plan is irrelevant to me, and I might as well go for a local-only account. If I do, then of what use to me is free local data once I've reached my international cap?

In other words: Say I take a 1GB package that offers an additional 10GB local-only. I start browsing and downloading, and use up my 1GB after, say, 10 days. Now I'm hamstrung for the rest of the month, because I have to access some international websites for my work.

So - say I take a 3GB package, which offers an additional 30GB local-only. By the end of the month, I've used 2.9GB. Of what use is the additional local-only data?

Sorry... I just don't get why ISPs think that offering free local after you've used up your blended data, is worth anything? what am I missing here?
 
If you used your Telkom E-mail account as your primary E-mail account, you could still do your work since your E-mails would work on local cap!

Nowadays you can get Gmail & other Google services, YouTube and Facebook working on local cap, so having just local cap left isn't that bad at all.
Also, there are a lot of games, local download sites and other stuff that you can do on local cap. See like www.locallist.co.za / www.locality.co.za for a list of sites!

The blended cap thing is pretty useless I have to admit, but it works very nicely if you "split the traffic" by dialing an additional international account once you've depleted the international cap on the blended account.
 
It's for people who don't want to buy extra international bandwidth but would still like access to a few local services.

Pada, how does one get Facebook on local? - is this in your thread ''forcing Google to Local cap only'' which now runs for many pages .

Can you post the url / url's to put into the host file, here?
 
Methinks Sony have a local mirror, so you can download a bunch of crap from them on local only. Also, you can download boeremeisie pr0n.
 
BayCityRoller: just check my signature :) You don't need to read all 14 pages. The first post should be enough to get YT/FB/Google working on local cap.

Pada: FB is not working on local mirror at the moment :), u have to delete all the entries in host it to work internationaly........

It's called route sentry. You buy an extra 1gig international from another isp and let your downloads go over local.

Yup :D I use about 20 GB Local bandwidth a month. It really is useful, depending on if you have SOMETHING to do with it. I use it for gaming and some local browsing and local downloads.
 
RouteSentry is probably the worst app that you can use for routing the local & international traffic across multiple accounts.
I've written Traffic Splitter to replace Route Sentry, but it's still not the perfect solution.

IMO: the perfect solution is to have a router/gateway to do the traffic splitting for you, because that is what routers are designed for.
I prefer MikroTik RB750's, because they're fairly cheap, easy to setup with WinBox and got excellent support.
