if you upgrade to PCI etc... looks like you spend more on the case and PSU than on the mobo these days.

Whats with that

Because the low power PSU's that were good enough for a long time, are now too weak.

And you only need to spend more on the case if you are trying to be really cool or have a Pentuim 4.

ok - so if I go socket 939, I can still get away with a cheapy KME case for 300 bucks?

yea but depending on your other hardware you might need a bigger power supply
im sure that comes with a 300watt

if you got a big vga card 2 drivers
2 optical type thing you might wanna 400 or bigger

What I'm trying to get at is:

is there any benefit to spending R1400 ish on the Antec Sonata versus
the R500 ish on KME 500W (as advertised on Brians site)

Well a KME isn't great quality, and a PSU isnt something that i would skimp on, cause it could cause you to loose your whole system..

Pay up in the beginning to avoid paying 10x later. :)

AOpen 500w is a very very good preformer for the price, It's a forton Power Source PSU. We (SA3DOC and RRA) ran a FX57 + 7800GTX on a DFI SLI-DR with that PSU for the South African record.
