Knock sensor does that actually - even oldish cars will have one.

Yeah I actually meant electronic systems as a whole in modern cars, not specifically the fuel injection itself.

But like Sinbad says the knock sensor would compensate negatively, so surely the FI itself would change the entire fuel mixture to avoid it knocking in the first place? And run better then.

It won't change the mixture. It will just retard the ignition timing.
