WhatsApp data bundles to make messaging cheaper

WhatsApp is the main channel of communication for many South Africans, letting them stay in touch with family and friends, share photos, and make voice calls.

WhatsApp has become so widespread that SMS traffic has rapidly declined in recent years, with mobile users ditching more expensive SMS messaging for the messaging platform.

Cell C – No clear terms and conditions regarding its WhatsApp offering.

a) This would be illegal from CellC not to provide full details
b) A quick search of their website (https://www.cellc.co.za/cellc/bundles-contract-detail/ShoutOut-Bundles) provides: "...and receive 24 hours or 30 days access to WhatsApp and Facebook (excludes WhatsApp calling, Facebook messenger and Facebook calling."

What is important is that even at average data costs Whatsapp calling is still cheaper than normal cell tariffs.

This service excludes voice calling and video calling
I wonder why not?
Need to use ~160MB on Cell C and ~250MB MB on Voda/MTN to break even (using 30 day bundles)

FreeMe Boost data bundles over 500mb have free WhatsApp. I'll find a link when back at PC.

  • 500MB data
  • Free 100 SMSs
  • Free 300 minutes to Telkom Mobile and Telkom Fixed lines
  • Valid for 31 days after recharging
  • Free 500MB for Instant Messaging and VoIP

Free Instant Messaging

Think of this as 500MB extra data dedicated to making calls and sending messages on Instant Messaging apps like WhatsApp, BBM and Viber

Not sure if this includes Telegram...

What happened to the MTN WhatsApp 1gig - R10 ?
I suppose it went the way of the dinosaurs. Who can blow a gig's worth of data in one day on WhatsApp, unless you video call everyone in your contacts list just for some unnecessary waffle.

No video or voice calls on MTN WhatsApp data.

I just think Telkom could have got a nod here for their offering.
What offering? They had a Whatapp bundle but it disappeared after a few weeks.
