whatsapp data, how does it work

I have found that if someone send me a video, and I download it on my phone, say it takes a minute and if I forward it, it takes only a few seconds, witch tell me the video is lying also on a server. Am I correct.

Also, if I send a whatsapp, does it go all the way the America, or do a local server switch it.
