So I got this phone two days ago, installed Whatsapp via wifi but it only seems to work when connected to wifi. Out of range no joy.

There is a setting called "Enable data access over mobile network". However this does not seem to work either and it's recommended to keep it disabled otherwise Google, Chrome, Gmail etc keep downloading updates which it IS doing anyway via wifi - 106Mb over last two days

Anyone knows how to set it up?

Yes you need to enable data over your mobile network, so that whatsapp will work. Make sure you've received the settings from your provider to enable your phones mobile data though.

I'm assuming you have the Sony Xperia Z?

Disable automatic application updates. You should be safe then.

Also, the phone has a mobile data limiter. Set it to warn you when you reach a certain amount of data used, and set it to cut off when you reach another amount of data used. Personally, because I'm on Cell C and get 100mb a month free, I set the warning to about 55megs and cut it off at 85megs.

I noticed on Whatsapp that I dont get messages on time when the phone goes into sleep mode, but I haven't figured out yet whether its because of the crap Cell C service or the phone itself.

Also, there is a problem with getting notifications when you enable stamina mode and the phone goes into sleep mode, even though you have the app on the whitelist.

Hi Peerie. Its the XPeria E Dual. I did set the data limiter to cut off at 90Mb. However I've got no idea where do disable automatic application updates. Also have the 100 Mb a month deal from Cell C :D

Cool I've got it. For anyone else wanting to disable app updates...

Enter Google Play > Press menu button > Settings > Auto-update apps...

3 Options

i) Do not auto-update apps
ii) Auto-update apps at any time. Data charges may apply
iii) Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only

Data access over mobile network enabled and Whatsapp still not working

Will have to take it in to cell c

Hold on what? Can you go on to chrome and browse the web? double check you are actually breaking out

Nope, I've just installed the internet and mms settings. Interwebz working now but have to reinstall Whatsapp, silly me went an uninstall it earlier

Okay so internet is working now, that's a good start.

Actually silly you for trying to use a phone without internet settings:D

So now I don't know anymore

- Internet settings installed
- Whatsapp reinstalled
- Data access over mobile network enabled

still not working. However, I don't have any of the pro-rata data bundle left. Could this be the problem?

Have you restricted background apps?

Stamina turns off wifi and 3G, so if an app is white listed, but needs net, it is effectively...

Probably the out of bundle data causing it.
Wait until tomorrow and you should be good (assuming calendar month renewal)

my previous contract didn't come with any data bundles, only airtime for voice, and whatsapp worked

Settings
Data usage
Top right corner (click to display a menu)
2nd tick box is restrict background data.

It must not ve restricted if you want WA to work on 3G. Or that is what I have found. It is probably coz when your phone is in standby/sleep mode WA is a background app...
