WhatsApp blows away SMS prices in South Africa

WhatsApp text messages are substantially cheaper than SMSes in South Africa — whether using in-bundle or out-of-bundle prices on Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, or Cell C.

WhatsApp is the world's most popular online instant messaging app — with over 3 billion users. It is also extremely popular in South Africa.

Yes. Its a fact, WhatsApp is a lot cheaper for the end-user to consume, BUT for a company (like Discovery that sends your Medical Tax Certificate) to initiate a WhatsApp Business conversation to its customers carries a base cost of $0.02 (for every 24-hour message) that goes straight to Mark Zuckerberg. Maybe do a bit more research into your article to really determine the true cost of WhatsApp (for Business) communications.

So? I've integrated plenty of messaging solutions for businesses, incl. Twilio, SMS Magic, SNS, Plivo and probably others, and the cost of SMS and WhatsApp are very comparable. And almost always it's not about which one is a fraction of a penny less costly, but which best suits the needs of specific channels.

But when it comes to consumers, there is a huge difference in the cost of SMS vs. WhatsApp, which is the whole point of the article. Businesses have no reason to care either way.

We need to petition for affordable gigabit internet and 10gig networking equipment. 1gig networking is just depressing.

How about some real it articles, not rehashing common knowledge?
Any case WA data is cheaper than normal data. Please DO NOT do an article of the cost of sending a WA message using WA data vs out of bundle SMS

1 gig networking is still adequate for most environments. True 1 gigabit, not a switch with 1 gig ports but not the actual capacity to do proper switching.

Even my Household manager and Landscaping Technician, who did not go to high school knows that Whatsapp is cheaper than SMS.

Household manager and landscaping technician.

Isn't there perhaps a dog daddy and momager around as well?

We cannot call them maids and garden boys now... it's considered "demeaning" :D:D
