Wheel bearing replacement...

My Mechanic told me that it cost R550 to buy one and i will be charged R200 for labour.

Is that a good price or what?

That is expensive. But if you drive a Ferrari its cheap. You can most of the times get it cheaper from bearing man, etc.
a friend with a run X got a cheaper one {R50 instead of R600] and modify if to fit.

Modify to fit, on a bearing, not sure I am that brave. The bearing is dealing with huge radial and axial forces, essentially the load bearing part of the entire car and the wheels and it was modified to fit. Hmm

Unsealed bearings aren't usually that expensive.

Give GM a call, ask for parts, tell them which car it is and ask how much a bearing kit is.

Also, it matters if it is front or rear. Front will almost always be sealed bearing whereas the rear is usually unsealed type in a low cost car.

Try give GM a call but given it is a sealed bearing doubt it'll be cheap. It also requires a bearing press to replace (hence the R200 replacement price).

Those bearings shouldn't have failed, did you fit after market alloys on the car?

Front bearings on a FWD car are usually more expensive than the rears. I remember paying R110 a couple years for one for my Audi from a local shop that stocks bearings, so it shouldn't cost you more than R250 at the most.

It's much more work to install since the whole wheel hub would have to be removed, and a press is usually used to remove the old and press the new one into place.

No, I had an accident exactly on that side. I was bumped by a double cab on the left front side of the car, we had to replace the door, Fender, wheel and bumper.
