So earlier on today W24 dropped an article for the 2023 Bakkie of the Year, these are the contenders:

- Nissan Navara 2.5 DDTI Pro-4X 4×4 AT;
- GWM P-Series 2.0TD LTD 4×4 AT;
- Mahindra Pik Up 2.2 S11 Karoo Storm;
- Peugeot Landtrek 4Action Africa Edition 4×4 6AT;
- Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 DI-DC 4×4 AT Xtreme;
- Isuzu D-Max 3.0 Ddi 4×4 V-Cross AT;
- Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana 2.0 BiTDI 4Motion AT; and
- Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana 3.0 V6 TDI 4Motion.

Notice something, anything? No Ranger & Hilux?!

Declining the invitation to participate, Ford of Southern Africa indicated that the Car of the Year accolade for the Ranger was good enough for the company. Toyota South Africa said the 2.4-litre Hilux Raider X considered for entry could not be launched in time.

What is the point of a "2023 Bakkie of the Year" contest if there is no Ranger & Hilux present??

Rather delay the contest then till you can get both.

2023 The Best of the Rest Bakkie of the Year.

Like F1 without RedBull. Just the best of the rest

Get over yourself.. Hilux and Ranger aren't the end all and be all of bakkies..

Hilux, cause they are 2016 models.

Ford, no answer there.

Look, there is a bakkie that caters to each and everyone's tastes and requirements including what they can afford. The market is really flooded with choices. That is good.

I had a Hilux 2.8 4x4, nothing inherently wrong with it. If you a fan that's all good. I initially wanted a V6 Amarok. And I decided to scratch that itch after I put 15k km on the Hilux.

The 1st gen V6 Amarok is an amazing vehicle. I really cannot fault it anywhere. I loved every minute of ownership. Loads of power. Moerse comfortable. And it went everywhere I wanted to take it in the 75k km I drove it. Effortlessly. I would have still had it if Ford did not launch the next-gen Raptor.

Now the Ranger. I would not have changed my Amarok for the new Ranger. It's nice and loaded with tech and all. But it's not enough to have swayed me. Even the new Amarok V6 is very nice and all. Moer expensive.
I have not checked recent pricing on the V6 Amarok and V6 Ranger. But afaik the new range topper Amarok is not far from the price of a new Raptor.

The new Raptor is just in another class. It is fokken heavy on juice and cannot take a load for shiit. But it was not built to take a load or be fuel efficient. It fscks off furiously, sounds awesome, and the suspension is out of this world. Has a boatload of features and a nice infotainment system.

I enjoy it immensely. Still getting used to it. But it is really a nice place to be and a nice driving experience. I know not everyone can afford to spend that amount on a bakkie. It is crazy if I must say so myself. But it is what it is.

My 2c.

Hilux will easily sweep the floor with every other bakkie on the market. Dated or not hilux is still king and that will never change. It does everything right.

The challenge here shouldn’t even be who is number one, but rather who is second best.

I mostly agree, that is the reason I made this thread.

”Bakkie of the year” but the two biggest selling & most loved options are missing/MIA.

It’s a pointless exercise unless it was “Best of the rest” or some nonsense.
