I see the current round of updates on Debian Wheezy (testing) wants to take gnome from 2.3 up to 3

At this stage, I'm not going to do it. I've read too much negative feedback on it. How long it will be before other bits of software force me to do it, I don't know. Maybe then I'll change from wheezy to squeeze.

You can always pin the packages. I pinned X in Sarge when they introduced a bug in the display driver I was using (which they still haven't fixed) and kept using that X even in Lenny - two Debian releases on. The only reason I moved on is because I wanted 64bit, and of course there was no (official) Sarge 64bit...

I did some upgrades this morning, without Gnome 3, but it has messed up the Gnome 2.3 menu system. The System menu is still there, but the Preferences and Administration menu items have gone, and the items that were under those menu items have also gone. sudo has also gone funny, it looks as though one has to now set up new paths to use sudo.

I've got the mutters at the moment...

Gnome 3 is a bigger balls up than Unity IMO, and XFCE looks like something from the early nineties without heavy customisation. I never dreamed Linux users would end up with the stupid problem trying to find a decent desktop environment

+1
I don't particularly like KDE and really don't like XFCE, so am now having to look for MyWorld's "host of other options". I'm going to have a look a crunchbang with openbox, but am a bit worried about it being based on Debian Live.

Well, to be honest, that "host of other options" seems a little smaller and incomplete now that Gnome 2 is gone.

Listing only the DE's and WM's that everyone can use and that don't require a degree in maths:
Fluxbox
Openbox
E16
E17
KDE
XFCE
LXDE
IceWM

Thanks, will look at them later this week. I'm going to put #! into a VBox tomorrow and have a look at Openbox.

@Knyro: if you don't like XFCE, you'll hate openbox! It's minimalist to the extreme :D

Could be fun customising it, but it's definitely not a mom & pop kind of environment.

After looking at some customised Openbox desktop screenshots I may just give it a whirl. I don't mind minimalism as long as I don't feel like I'm back in the 90's. I also don't mind spending a weekend customising a DE to be exactly how I want it. I hated XFCE because despite days of customisation I could never fully get the ugliness/feeling of datedness out.

Thanks for the heads up, now I can leave that annoying Fisher Price Unity bar.

*Very* useful blog entry for Openbox:
