When did RAM get so expensive?

Was thinking of just dropping the cache (hueueueue) and investing in 32 gb RAM for the long term, but wow, prices have gone up for sure.

I bought 8gb of RAM (4x2) 2 years back and it was R400 a stick, looking at Wootware, the same RAM is almost R200 more.

Is this purely inflation? Does RAM not get cheaper to manufacture?

The fire caused RAM prices to jump, not sure why it hasnt come down yet.

Two months ago (Dec 2013), a fire at a Hynix factory created a shortage in DRAM inventory and exacerbated the gradual climb in DRAM prices. While the fire wasn’t all that severe — Hynix has sworn that its memory capacity will ramp back to full in fairly short order — its impact on the market has been significant. In early September, the price of 8GB of Corsair memory was sitting at $72. Today, it’s jumped up to $93.

Take a look at the change in the exchange rate. International shipping prices have also been escalating. That applies no matter where you live in the world and where you're shipping from.

Other sources say there was no shortage, but panic buying, because people believed the scare stories, pushed the price up.

You should also take into account whether it is DDR2 or DDR3 RAM.

DDR3 is now mainstream and is cheaper now than DDR2.

DDR2 is gettiing scarce hence the rise in price due to supply and demand. Also distributors are buying in smaller quantities of DDR2 so their pricing is higher.

A wild theory emerged that DDR3 prices are up due to DDR4 being on the way. I don't see that making sense as DDR4 would then have to be cheaper than DDR3.

Ooor maybe DDR4 will be like lank kark expensive and because the DDR3 prices have been increased to crazy amounts the DDR4 will just seem to NOT cost THAT much more than DDR3... :whistling: like ... maybe... huh.

I haven't been buying anything locally anymore. Pretty much buying all my hardware on Amazon these days and RAM there still seems somewhat comparable.

I mean I can still buy a 8GB ECC DDR3 1600 chip for R800 which is what I bought it at a few months ago.

Similarly 4TB RAID Drive selling for R1.9k. Locally however prices seem to have skyrocketed.
