In the US, if you started contributing towards your 401K after leaving school, you could retire comfortably in your early 40's. Most people I knew living there also did so. But, times have changed. The world is under siege. Capitalism is being eradicated globally. What awaits the new generation is terrible.

Donff vorry komrade, gaffamint vill gief us all baysic incum grunt.

In my 30s when i started working for an employer who took it off my salary

Never started, never will.

The whole pension/retirement is a lie that started after WW2.

Maybe it could have worked if we had a gold backed monetary system, but that ship sailed in 1933 when they did the first revaluation of gold.

I fully believe you should have investments and businesses. But I don't care about any of the official retirement options.
What will you do if you are disabled or can’t work anymore?

We are ranked 22nd for 1-year and 25th for 3-year performance out of 31 countries. Majority of markets are beating us. US market up 49% in 3 years while we are actually in the red by 6%.

Return on investments is SA over the last 10 years are better than other countries. This is a bit old bit 18% for Rands and 13% for dollar market.

We are an emerging market and they are stable which is basically the reason why.

I have many friends who are analysts etc our markets do better but when mass riots happen or they try vote in Zuma again our markets fall over. Overall you make more money in SA then the dollar for instance.

That was true when we had a strong resources sector.

What? Last 10 years in SA have been a disaster.

Edit,

I disagree so much with your statement I had to double check this was not a thread necro from 20 years ago.

Still true but I mean it could easily change over the next year, 5 years who knows you can only look backwards and try predict going forwards.

Also I have investments and try to keep up with things but rely on people who do it for a living for good advice.

and we are still an emerging market with growth vs a stable market.

Call up your investment guy and ask if you don't believe me.

I’m confused because that article is contradicting what you are saying. It even clearly states “The strong outperformance of the S&P 500 began in 2013 and has continued since.” in the 4th paragraph.

Just take any S&P 500 chart vs a JSE all share chart to see the significant difference in performance. The JSE has gained only 54% in the last 10 years while the S&P 500 gained 176%.

That 18% vs 13% might be confusing. Makes it sound like the SA/ZAR market has performed better, but all I read in it is that the Rand lost value over the years, so if you invested in the SA market in Rand terms then you would have been even worse off when compared to USD instruments.

investment is not savings...

Retirement savings are investments. My retirement savings are not cash sitting in an account, it is mostly shares. Rental properties and such things outside of formal retirement products, that generate in income, so you could "retire" were just your form of retirement savings, just without the income tax lowering benefit.

you go with that

investment is not savings and speculation is not investment

your word salad won't change that

The laymen call it retirement savings, when it is retirement investments, if you can change that, that would be great, until then, keep being pedantic.

We all know you "saved" for retirement, else you'd be out on the streets and homeless, or else some rich relative is supporting you.

reality is not dictated by what laymen call things

there is no obligation on me to change how laymen think

you know very little about what I did. If you know what I did or am doing, please feel free to provide the evidence to substantiate your claim, otherwise its not knowledge, but simple conjecture on your part

and who is this "we all"

you speaking on behalf of who exactly?
