My indicator is also xp's one. Go to Control panel, power and maintenance, power options. The battery meter is in one of the tabs. Think you can choose whether to show or hide it. Hope this helps

If its a modern laptop then there will be one.

Another option is to get a system tray utility, if all else fails. There are several available that not only show your battery status, but also online-time available, voltage levels, charge time and so on.

The built-in XP battery-life indicator is sucktastic at best, you're much better off with something else - say, f'r instance Notebook Hardware Control; you'll get the indicator and can monitor other things too, like HDD temp.

I agree. My Ubuntu battery indicator is actually pretty cool.
