Hi all,
Let me start this thread out in a normal mental state...............put some mellow music on and calm myself.

Now.

When is it enough to actually make a serious and demanding stand!!!
When are ppl going to get up off there asses and get out there and make a difference!!
When are we as a community going to get serious about our objectives!!!

WHEN........
The answer is that with humanity as a whole we like to be part of something without having to do much about anything.....This is a problem.

My question to you as a person ... and i am talking to you the reader of this thread!!
What have you done in the past 6 months to make a difference and what you have to show for it! Why do we as ppl have to always rely on having something in return for doing something for others. It should not be like that. My personal opinion is that we need to make a deadline for stuff to happen and if it does not happen we need to get up off our asses and show the country how serious we are about what we do. We need to set a schedule whereby when something doesnt happen we have guidelines of how to counter.

I am personally at the end of the line and i believe that we have more power than is shown to us.
If i remember correctly we have the power as ppl to change our government with the snap of a finger if we were serious about it.
The point i am trying to make is if we were serious we would have shut down this per gig solution before it had even grown into something official.

(YES, i know the ppl that have legal backround might find this amusing but the fact of the matter there was a thing that was put into place called the vote of no confidence..if i remember the name correctly.)

I am at the last straw
i started out small by helping ppl online with general help which lead to irc channel starting on the shadowfire server.
I have to date 80 -+ members registered on the irc channel that have become members of the myadsl forums.
This is the start for me to be doing something instead of just sitting around waiting for the likes of RPM and his fellow helpers to do something and us as members going " yeah we have done it".

That is not how the world functions
if everyone of us were to convert an ounce of frustration into something constructive we wouldnt be where we are now. we would be over and beyond worring about 5 or 10 MB lines. :P . Instead of just dreaming about them.

My Goal of this thread is to get you members that are reading this to make a decision right here right now. ARE YOU APART OF THE GREATER CAUSE OR JUST A BYSTANDER WATCHING FROM THE SIDELINES CAUSE YOU ARE TO AFRAID TO VOICE YOUR OPINION.

BE HEARD AND TREATED LIKE A FAMILY MEMBER.
This is your chance to let me and fellow members that have the same feelings know how you feel about this issue.

When is it going to be the last straw.....stop being like dogs and letting them beat us. Time for us to bite back and to coordinate together to make it known.


PLEASE PPL comment on this. even if you are just thinking about stuff comment on what you think should be the correct way of doing things
 
I think its a matter of "The devil you know against th edevi lyou dont".
People in general are very protective of the small luxuries we get ( DSL in this case ), and we seem to worry that should we stand up for ourselves we will lose our luxury and perhaps look foolish.

Personally I have almost given up fighting, since finding true allies is hard, so much lip service but so little action, as if the enormous effort to raise oneself from the chair would destroy worlds ...
Show me people I know will stand up and be counted and I will happily join, but now days everyone seems keen to look to someone else to get dirty and get the job done.

So I suppose that said, Telkoms high rates are our fault, due to our collective lack of action, so the next person to moan about high prices or bad service should be prepared to stand by the words and not or shut up and be happy with the results of our apathy.
 
When one looks at the internet you have to have a look at all the possibilities of its use. Country's such as Germany and Especially hong kong are striving hard to increase speeds faster and faster with deutsche telekom bringing 50mb to germany and Hong Kong internet 1 gigabit. Now telkom classes people who use say even 10 gigs as abusers, since South Africa is younger in the broadband world than the first world country's telkom really shouldnt have much say as to what its used for, putting that aside some of the main reasons for speed increases and broadband access are the following...

a) Streaming video which takes up a lot of bandwidth, even a small window at say, 320x240 needs about 512kbps for it to stream nicely at high resolution and other country's want this to be full screen high resolution for future use, this would require about 4mb internet access.

b) Streaming Audio, amateur radio stations on the internet are becoming larger in number and the internet is a great place to start since anyone with a fast connection can host one and anyone with a medium speed connection can listen to one.

c) Data transfer, when reading a article about Hong Kong's upgrade to 1 gigabit internet access they used the main reference of how long it would take to send a 2 hour video which due to length and quality should be a huge ammount of data as their reference.

Those three points have been the major motivation for speed increases, when one looks at permanent internet itself the following benefits can be seen.

a) Streaming Video
b) Streaming Audio
C) Access to work via VPN
d) Access to a wealth of information for scholar's
e) Entertainment
f) Online gaming
g) Up to date news

The list can go on and on.

With broadband being seen as more and more important in the rest of the world by 1'st world country's which South Africa should be striving towards we turn to look at our own and only telecom provider, telkom.

Telkom seeing people who use even 2 gigabytes over their cap as "abusers" when they are using broadband is rediculous, lets take a look at how easily one can spend bandwidth...

1) The world of gaming...
Online games becoming more and more popular but due to port shaping the international gaming world is choked by telkom can use little or large ammounts of bandwidth, one could however cap themselves at online gaming alone. Then there are game demo's, these days a game demo can be over a gigabyte in size just for about 30 minutes of play. Some of the most popular online games are not even sold here since the game creators know that the market isnt big since international gaming is terrible, a big example of this would be "World of Warcraft"

2) Audio/Video
Capping yourself in one day is a very simple matter with this with video since its easy to reach your cap in a day.

3) Software
I remember a while back when windows XP service pack 2 came out Microsoft was shipping free CD's with the service pack on it (which was about 250 megs I think) since they were aware of South Africa's internet situation with caps.

Now if you look at this imagine what a typical 4 person family of which say 3 used the internet, capping sounds REALLY easy doesnt it.

Possible transfer per month (Working on a 512k line but 416k speeds for 24/7 access on a 30 day month)

1 hour = 182.81 megabytes downstream, 365.62 megabytes if max downstream and upstream
1 Day = 4387.50 megabytes downstream, 8775 megabytes if max downstream and upstream
1 week = 30712.5 megabytes downstream, 61425 megabytes if max downstream and upstream
1 month = 131625 megabytes downstream, 253250 megabytes if max downstream and upstream

All of the above was to show the possibilities of broadband

Addressing the issue at hand which is November a hard cap of 3 gigs by SAIX will hurt one area of business especially which is local hosting, local hosting is more expensive than international hosting thanks to telkom's bandwidth prices and if local becomes capped what will stop people moving to the international servers which are cheaper ? Then if one looks at the home user who has broadband with shackles on, 3 gigabytes if I used it how I wanted to would last me a few days, a week at most.

Telkom is just steaming ahead with their changes, if their proposed changes are allowed to go into fact it would be a disaster, if ICASA is going to move it needs to be fast before this disaster occurs.
 
Lets do a bit of math shall we...... A 512k Telkom Line can pull down data at lets say 52k/s. So lets work out how much bandwidth you would need to complete a month's worth of abusive downloading. 30 days x 24 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds x 52k/s /1024 /1024 would give us the amount of bandwidth in GB needed for a 512k line to be effective. That would result in a massive ....... WAIT FOR IT ....... 128.5 GB worth of data. Telkoms measily 3GB cap would mean that you could use the net for about 2.3% of the line's maximum capacity. Disgusting isn't it.

But wait it gets better.......Take Telkom's cap to the UK and your cap will be blown in about 21 MINUTES at 24mb/s. NOW THATS DISGUSTING !!!!

I don't even want to compare caps with the UK as I may just fall down in tears.
