When was the last time you completely lost yourself in the web? Do you feel like the web has lost its luster? Your first experience of the Internet is like that of your childhood Christmases. They are packed with wonder and amazement because you didn’t have to do a thing to make the magic happen. The magic kind of happened by itself when one is younger. In your earlier web experience, the information kind of rushed to you because the experience was so new. As time goes by the Internet becomes much more utility driven than entertainment driven. You still use it to solve problems that can be solved with information but you don’t do link chasing anymore.
I for one have been experiencing that lull in web excitement. It feels as if you have been a junky for so long and just cannot get that high anymore. This has been a problem for months whereby I just lost that urge to chase down links as often as I used to. I am however pretty sure it is a normal par for the course thing to experience because I have talked to many other web users, who have been using the web for an extended period of time that have found themselves in the same position.
Some researchers speak of something called “Internet Fatigue”. I am not sure if this is it, because what they refer to is a kind of trapped feeling, where people cannot escape the web but dread having to communicate on it. That is not entirely what I am talking about. The feeling I am talking about is not a feeling of being trapped. It is a feeling of being let go or too free if you know what I mean. It is as if the web let you go and you are feeling as if you have lost something. That magic that makes you dive down the rabbit hole of the wonderland of the web. It feels like the web has grown stale and the wonder element is not there anymore. You need that wonder and want that amazement to keep it interesting.
Maybe Internet Fatigue is a more encompassing term and can perhaps include the symptoms I have explained to you. Judging by this link it could well be. http://www.designnine.com/news/content/internet-fatigue
I cannot completely identify with this view on CNN even though I am sure there are plenty of web savvy people out there who could. I am completely connected and not weary of it. I just wish the web would enthrall me as much as it used to. http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2009/06/10/do-you-suffer-from-internet-fatigue/
Here is an interesting take on what I am talking about. http://ifranky.com/online/internet-fatigue-the-need-for-an-outlet/
