Hi all,

As title states, I'm trying to figure out if its worth replacing my outer cv joints or not,

My car only makes the clacking noise on turns and only left, not straight and not all the time,

Cv joint boot isn't torn, but looks quite loose, but only on the one side,

Anyway, was watching this Eric the car Guy video on YouTube, he says cvs especially outer
And last a long long time, in this state,
Says leave it until it clacks when your going straight.
Or better yet, though not sure here in Sa
Replace the whole half shaft, as it will cost less

Not sure what to make of this advice; good/bad?

Replace. Inner CV will vibrate a-lot if shot. Don't take risk, and keep boot intact. that CV was damaged by dust and water entering thru the boot and forming a grinding paste.

If they are knocking you should replace them. Why wait till they cause a breakdown?

No worst that can happen is CV will break. Leaving him stranded next to road having to pay extra tow in charges. Unless he is rocking a LSD which he is most probably not. And then again only delivering power to one side of the LSD will damage it.

I like Murphy. I like the way he nails uneducated people. Especially all those Taxis losing a rear wheel with side shaft...

I guess you're one of those people doing a drive-by-wave upon seeing people in need next to the road :p

I agree with you; although I must point out something strange that happened recently;

I heard a squeak really bad when turning left; turn out becuse the coil springs were not aligned properly
I kept hearing that, took it to supasquick they turned the coil spring that was causing this and squeak is gone;

my question is is this important to change, or wait until it starts cicking when going straight ahead;

this eric the car guy was adament, its cheaper to replace a half shaft then change CV boots;

how true is this?

anybody with worn CV joints care to share what happens if you don't change them quickly enough?
I mean mine been clicking for around 3 months, and you only hear it in parking lots and when accelerating;

I take a very wide left turn before gilloys everyday doing at least 40 KM/H and never hear it then?

You should never have heard them clacking in the first place if your car was properly maintained!

There is no discussion here - if they are making a noise, replace them, and yes, it can be cheaper to replace with complete re-con units from a reputable supplier.

That is when you know it's time to replace it :p

You can get re-cons if budget is a problem. But just know you will then need to replace it again in a year or so. Rather buy new ones and not have a problem again for a while. And stop spinning the car...

isnt it cheaper to get half shafts that include both inner and outer CV joints?

also if I want to continue driving on the one CV joint; how long until it fails? can it cause an accident?
one other thing, is it better to replace both CV joints? or just the broken one?

I used to spin a 1.0 Uno man... It can and will spin :p

your joking right? there is simply no way a 1L car with the engine from a weedwacker will spin;

its just too small and underpowered to do anything! citi golf one thing as its very light; and the engine can be 1,8/1,6L in that;

but I get overtaken by guys in chevy sparks all the time;

Im sure that causes so much damage to your car afterwards; clutch burnt out; drivershafts knackered;
it cant be healthy for such a small car with such a tiny engine to spin?

its not a gushese BMW that nothing will happen to it; its a UNO with a much smaller engine.....

Not true. I have managed to drive up a CV without the boot leaking or perishing. and it was a good one, did more than 200K Km with it. :p

And find out the price difference on the recons. Its worth the extra few bucks to buy new ones.

They do wear out even if the car is well maintained. They wear out much quicker if the boot lets the grease out or contaminants in.

If you can hear it, replace it.
I cannot believe that a complete half shaft would be cheaper than a cv joint.
