When do you think that HD will become the norm instead of a premium. The only reason I got DSTV was to watch soccer, so I got the compact package and now to watch it in HD I have to upgrade to the full bouquet which is definitely not worth it.

How long do you think before HD broadcasting becomes standard?

knowing multichoice they will probably charge more if most of their channels were hd, for me hd is already a "norm" though, all my series and "good" movies i download in hd, if its an effects/action/scifi film full hd is a must... only reason i pay for dstv is sport, news and maybe the odd show thats worth watching, not to mention the other half likes her soaps.... if i could get 7de laan and that other rubbish she watches online i would cancel dstv today.

From a DSTV perspective, I think HD will be compelling for me once more than half of the content is in HD. I still have an SD PVR and good ol' fashioned 72cm CRT TV and have no plans to upgrade soon.

what if they have half their channels in hd, slap another R150 on the asking price and call it the "HD premium" package? still compelling?

When a large chunk of the population have HD TVs. I'd say 5-7 years

But since most of their content is international, when the UK and US start to phase out SD then there will only be HD content available for DStv to broadcast.

Not sure about standard, HD broadcasting costs more (3x more bw requires more SAT transponder capacity), so only select few popular/in-demand channels will be broadcast in HD. Maybe when the next high-capacity SA facing SAT is launched the pricing will drop and more HD channels will become financially viable.

Also linking HD channels to the premium package is a MC commerical descision, no practical reason why they couldnt offer them as an add-on to lesser packages.
