The leaders of 10 African countries are gathering in Ethiopia to try to agree a common position on climate change, months before a crucial UN meeting.

They are expected to renew demands for billions of dollars in compensation for Africa because of damage caused by global warming.

And they are likely to ask rich nations to cut emissions by 40% by 2012.

African nations are among the lightest polluters but analysts say they will suffer the most from climate change.

BBC science reporter Matt McGrath says the move to agree a common negotiating platform for Africa recognises the continent's failure to make its voice heard on the debate.

I mean wtf man? Africa may be the continent with the least industrial pollution but what about over grazing, over population, lack of infrastructure which leads to rivers and damns being polluted?

What about illegal mining, what about illegal fishing etc etc etc.

They trying to find another gravy train.

Next thing we know global warming will be blamed on racism.
 
I wonder what they intend to do with the guilt money.

Oh wait .. make like Eskom and build more coal power stations.

You know the hypocrisy of environmental control? Something like better there than here. Uhm.. think about it. Where does all the resources mined/ harvested/ cut down/ fishing go to? africa? hell no. You would be right to say that they get compensated for their goods as such but the thing that annoys me is that while western countries will say & rally behind e.g. saving the rainforest, they will not provided alternatives for development nor will they curtail their own destruction of their natural habitats.

Africa asking for compensation is stupid though, what needs to happen much like with ivory & rhino horns is reduction of the market which we all know is pretty much unlikely when it comes to resources that africa offers. There are attempts to do so in a more managed way but who really gives a crap, its africa and for now people don't care because it doesn't appear to affect them in the developed world(but it will in a big way).

ps. Africa on a whole is not over populated, resources are badly used and abused.

the more the earth warms, the more areas open up for additional food production. No problem.

Remember that back when there were more trees on the earth, the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere was probably higher than it is today.

Humans have lived through several periods of increased temps already.

Not necessarily. There might be increased desertification as the earth warms. It's most likely that dry areas will get drier and rainy areas will get rainier.

WRT the OP - if the "billions of dollars of compensation" was allocated only to environmental initiatives, I would agree that this is a great idea. If it's to enrich a few waBenzi then **** it.
 
Um if the African nations can sue western nations because of global warming, surely all nations canthen start picking on the biggest polluting culprits? A.K. America being one of the worst?

Make no mistake if anyone thinks any money compensated will go toward environmental initiates they are very much mistaken. People this is Africa, it doesn't have a very good track record now does it?

Ethiopia made their own problems, civil war, over farming the same land until nothing could grow back, etc, etc. What's the betting that this will be claimed as the result of global warming? Ethiopia et al has had more than enough help/financial assistance to sort out their problems and done diddly **** to fix it.

This is nothing more than an exercise in white guilt or a derivative thereof. The black man can do no wrong, and on the very rare occasion he does do wrong it's not his fault because he was previously oppressed/disadvantaged/victim of colonialisation.

In the tropical regions, yes maybe... but probably only due to deforestation. In the regions just above the poles massive tracts of fertile land will become unfrozen and available for farming. The weather patterns might change as well bringing more rain to existing desert regions. The things is... nobody knows since our climate data only really goes back reliably to the 1970s. What we do know is that man has survived these global periods of warming several times before.
 
But the African Fat cats sell their polution rights to the rest of the world so who is to blame the buyer or the seller? I think if it were not for sale ....


Its the african get out of free card...
 
isnt India and China the worst polluters?

looking at the comments on the original article looks like the "White Guilt" syndrome in the U.k is coming to an end and I suggest that instead of sending money to Africa they try this cheaper alternative
