Seeing as most photographers don't really print, or at least not as often as they might have in the days of film, do you find yourself sticking to the traditional aspect ratios, largely a legacy from the print days, such as square, 5x7, 2x3, 8x10, etc - or do you just crop arbitrarily?

I'm a bit ruthless with the cropping tool. If the picture doesn't fit the fram right then it gets a plain border to emphasize the actual subject. And maybe a bigger frame.

Are you referring to printed photos?

I stick to common formats only like 1:1, 3:2, 4:3 and 16:9. Most superzoom cameras support shotting in the last three anyway.

I mostly use the standard options that lightroom provides. Then I use rule of thirds, golden mean, diagonals, etc to bring out the best of a photo.

I have a question regarding printing digital photos. Why is it when I take my photos to get printed the get cropped when thy are printed out ?

You're possibly printing in a different aspect ratio. My dSLR shoots in 2x3 so if I print a 5x7 or 8x10 somethings got to go.

Oh okay because I think I also shoot in 2x3. So if I want to avoid getting things cropped out for me I should change my aspect ratio?

You can crop in post to reflect the paper size you intend to print on.

Depends on what the picture will be used for.

Internet generally get cropped free while things for printing I try to crop to a standard aspect ratio so that they can all be printed out looking the same.

Rule of thirds can be applied regardless of the aspect ratio you're cropping at but how can you maintain the golden mean (aka golden ratio) unless you're using 2x3?

EDIT - or did you mean the Golden Section rule?
