Where are the celebs?

Its amazing that celebs like the 5fm jocks are not making more comments about what is happening with Telkom (ie... Garath and Gillman).... I think theyre either to stupid to be aware of the situation or theyre Telkom shareholders.

I cant think of any other valid reasons.
 
Maybe the big advertising contract the stations have with Telkom? The station owners would jump on the jocks if they openly accuse a big paying client!
 
SABC.
Governmint company = governmint policies.
You don't hear them ragging the political parties or even the political statments that people in positions of power make either.
Methinks that they're not allowed to take sides.
 
Actually, Gareth did make a few snotty remarks after the Genesis report. Thereafter they didn't even make a report on the ICASA hearings/findings even though the other stations were.
 
It's all about the money.

Independent journalism in this country is all but dead.

Fact is, the advertisers call the shots these days - if you critisise big business, they'll pull their adverts.

Then we have the SABC, which is the governmint mouth piece. Although they try to disguise this fact, it's so evident it's beginning to get embarassing.
Take for instance the failure of the SABC to report the recent booing of the deputy prez - aparently the tapes from the freelance reporter didn't arrive on time. Yeah right.
Oh yeah, the governmint is also trying to gag etv again.

So, the internet remains about the only place to voice frustration about Telkom. I find it amusing that Telkom provide the infrastructure for the protest against them. ;)

They dont have opinions unless they're given them by the station chief. A dj who actually thinks for himself will soon get the sack - Scott and Pilgrim come to mind.

Besides, unless things have changed, they often do remote shows via ISDN which is set up specially for an event by telkom - they've probably been told not to make waves on that front.

Tell me about it - when's the last time oilgate was mentioned on SABC?
 
Moaning about telecommunications is perceived as not being 'cool', even though all the 'cool' people moan about their cell/landline bills.

The people who don't moan are the ones who don't check their detailed billing, and besides, they have more money than they need so whats a few grand on a phone bill.

I know this is a late response but, here goes:

Messrs Shuttleworth and the rest of them: They're counting on Telkom to rollout infrastructure to the schools for connectivity for the Shuttleworth Foundation's project for schools. Telkom has several partnerships with the Shuttleworth Foundation (here's a link to one)

As long as these partnerships are maintained, the big punters will not openly criticize Telkom
 
5Fm is currently running a big vodacom/telkom advertising campaign where people send an sms or phone in to to download ringtones, this morning i heard them saying, "and with special thanks to telkom for their Adsl service, order telkom Adsl 192 now for your home for only R270,experience much faster speeds and download music etc and play games etc." something to that effect, which is ludacris (sp?) cos all the things they advertise are classified as abuse by telkom. Totally insane.

Nope. If they say the wrong things they can lose their jobs. Telkom is a major service provider for the SABC.

If they had the guts and knew they would be supported if they did stand up like some 702 jocks do then it would be great.

Maybe one day...
 
Primedia I think owns 702/94.7/KFM.
They have no hesitation when it comes to critique of Telkom.
On the other hand 5FM and the like is owned by SABC and advert's from Telkom pay the bills. They're not going to bite the hand that feeds them.
If any one of SABC is reading this - It'll be a cold day in hell before I pay my TV license, I dont pay for propaganda.
