Hey all,

I've lived at my current house for the last 2 years and have had consistent problems with the adsl disconnecting. I've logged numerous calls and had technicians trying to fix the problem to no avail. I work at home and rely on the internet being up all day every day. However it disconnects at least once or twice a day. Sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for several hours. I've tried everything suggested from installing a filter on the phone line to reducing my adsl speed to the technician checking the copper of my line (not sure where he did this, I presume outside the complex?)

One of the suggestions that keeps coming up from the technicians is that it may be due to how far I live from the closest exchange. I think the one technician mentioned the closest exchange is 6.1km (that doesn't sound very far to me, but whatever).

I will be moving to a new house in a couple months and was hoping there is some way to find out where the exchanges are in specific areas so I can move as close to one as is feasibly possible. Is there some kind of list or method of finding out where the exchanges are in JHB?

Many thanks

broadbandstats isn't that accurate either.

Secondly, it could be that you're connected to a DSLAM that is closer and it is only the distance to the DSLAM that counts. Often the DSLAM would reside in the exchange though.

6km is about the maximum limit for ADSL, in which case you may only connect at like 384kbps speeds, because anything faster will be unstable.
Have a look at the graph shown here: http://www.internode.on.net/residential/adsl_broadband/easy_broadband/performance/

Many thanks for the replies. Apologies for the late reply, for some reason I wasn't emailed when there were replies even though I had that option selected.

Anyway, to say my line is unstable is an understatement  Thanks for the links, ill definitely consult them when it comes time to move in a couple months. I currently live in the Craigavon area which is basically right next to Fourways mall. I tried to do a search on http://www.broadbandstats.co.za and from what I can tell my closest exchange is near the corner of Witkoppen and William Nicol (http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RFWS). If that truly is the closest one, then that is quite far I guess.

I also read on the links provided that I should ensure I have a good router that is compatible with ADSL2+. I currently have a Billion Bipac 5102 connected to the adsl, which in turn is connected to a Linksys wireless wrt54GL router. As far as im aware those are good enough? I just want to ensure i've done everything I can from my side for the time being until I move.

Thanks.
