1. Jaggery

2. Tamarind (can for the life of me not remember where I got the supply I have now, but which is fast running out)

Maybe Avatar or Hosehead or HypoThesis or DJK can help?

Thanks

Avatar can't. But her mother can. She will ask her and get back to you by tomorrow.

The question is, in which part of Jo'burg are you looking? North or south?

tamarind - china town???? I dunno whats jaggery

Tamarind:sick: try Fordsburg or an Indian shop close by.

Not sure what Jaggery is.

Tamerind should be fairly easy in a supermarket catering for Indians. Jaggery you will only get in a shop specialising in Indian prayer goods. They should know what jaggery is but if they don't ask for ghur :D

Now if were in KZN either would be easily obtainable :)

PS. Out of curiosity why do you need jaggery?

Tamarind is an easy one - most of the Indian shops I've visited stock it. Unfortunately there's no real substitute if you can't find it though. Galangal is another one I've been looking for lately.

I've never heard of or cooked with jaggery - for sugar I usually buy a tub of palm sugar from the health food store.

In the UK you can pick up tamarind, galangal, kaf-ffir lime leaves, palm sugar etc at the local Sainsbury's. I wish it were the same here - although if you're on good terms with your supermarket manager you could always ask them to source some for you...

A mutton recipe.

did you try the fordsburg flea market?

No, I'll ask Mr Blu. Am not too fond of Fordsburg.

Have you seen Woolworths are slowly getting there? They now stock curry leaves - actually been a while now :)

Those grow really well in Jhb ;)
We seem to have a good climate/soil for it. And you have an endless free supply then.

I live in apartment block, space is limited :D

I do have a black chilli plant growing in a pot on my patio.

Never heard of it before until we found it at a nursey in the Northern Cape - the chilli starts off red and then turn black when it's ripe.

The curry leaves plant needs to grow in a pot for a good while before you can put it in the ground, so you could look at having one of those too :D
