Where can i get a WD1600 hdd controller?

Hi, this is prolly an unusual request, but here goes.
My Western Digital drive (model WD1600) died on me, and upon inspection i saw that one of the chips on the drive's contoller was fried (as in physically toasted).

I am hoping that my data is still in tact (me X fingers), well im hoping that it is as that drive contains some pretty important information. Does anyone know where i can buy a second hand or new drive? Just so i can swap controllers and get my data. Retrieving the information off the drive is more important, so i wont mind to buy a second hand drive just so i could use the controller for a few minutes. If i successfully retrieve my data it would be worth it :)

I would use a company that does harddrive data recovery, but only as a very last resort.

Anybody got any ideas?
 
Is it a PATA (IDE) or a SATA drive?
Do you have the full model number - I have a WD1600JD-22HBB0 - a SATA HDD
I'm currently using it but am thinking of upgrading next month.

Other infor on the drive is:
Drive Parameters: LBA 312581808 160GB
Caviar SE series

Enhanced IDE Hard Drive
Drive Parameters: LBA 3125 81808
WD P/N: WD1600JB - 00GVA0
 
Ja, good thinking on swopping the PC boards out - you will still be able to access your data.

Treat it as if you've got only one chance to recover your data - get a HDD ready for copying your data to, and work quickly, first by copying the essential data, then the rest.

And good luck with that - I've been there, done that with the 1Gb's and 2Gb's Western Digitals... (the HDD's started to pack up, and no backups was done, so we got a HDD of the same model and capacity, swapped PC boards, copied the data to a new HDD, and swapped the boards back again. Most of the time we got the data off fairly easily, there was one or two where we got one or two corrupt files... so YMMV.)

Western Digital used to be notoriously unreliable during the 90's. I also had many 1GB drives go kluckity kluck.

I'm not sure if the PATA and SATA boards are compatible - can anyone confirm this?
 
Yea... im gona treat it as a one time deal. Just need to get my data !! Geez.
When that little voice tells you to back up... DO IT !!
*sigh... I'll prolly end up going to various pc repair shops and try to get one from one of them.
 
Wow ... 8 months ago. Odd thing is, I have a spare WD 160 just like that sitting on the PC room floor at home right now.
 
160GB.

There's a 250GB and a 200GB lying there as well. Put them up for sale maybe over a week ago in the classifieds.

I found this thread when searching for Western Digital IDE 1600JB hardrive. If thats the model you still have, please lemme know coz i'm looking for parts.

I'm able to source PCBs for any HDD models and do the EEPROM/adaptive info swap. PM me if in need.
 
Thanx for the good and really affordable work Shouthbit The new PCB and HDD working great! No more dead hardrive :)
