Why Plasma if I may ask?
I'm going from Plasma to LCD now - not because of picture quality (I prefer the plasma tbh) but because of the screen burning/image retention.
Mine (42" LG) and my girlfriends (32" Sinotec) image retention are terrible ; and I'm using too many static image devices (PC, video streamer, Xbox) to warrant the risk.
Why Plasma if I may ask?

Personally, if you're shopping for plasma I would rank the following manufacturers as being the least worrisome for IR (best to worst)
Pioneer KURO
Panasonic
Samsung
LG
Sinotec
HUGE CAVEAT: Of course, this all depends on your budget and looking after your plasma for first 100 hours or so (full screen images using zoom function for letterboxed content; keep gaming to 2 hours; using orbiter or screen-wipe function, keeping channels with 'tickers' i.e CNN to a minimum; turning down contrast/brightness to 50% of their value for this duration)
Then enjoy and use common sense
For now, given the current situation with hdpvr and the mixture of hd and sd content - I still think plasma is the way to go for overall motion,off axis viewing, sports, and price vs size

From the extensive reading i've done on the LCD v Plasma debate, and then plasmas in general that is exactly the order of brand i am looking at. my yet to be determined budget will ultimately drive which one i end up with.

I have a Pioneer KURO 428xd Gen 8 plasma, HDPVR, PS3 and all I can say is wow,wow,wow! Still amazed sometimes when I look at friends blurry messes on their 40k lcd's...
For butter smooth BD playback at 24fps, gaming, heck even heavily compressed mnet-hd - it was all worth it.
And no IR whatsoever after a lot of gaming, Burnout Paradise
But, for 90% performance of the KURO's at more reasonable prices I would go with panasonics...
And stay away from the Pioneer Elite KURO picture thread, never would I have thought that I could possibly consider paying 90k for a tv, until I saw those pictures - thank g*d for common sense

But I'd still get the LCD as it's less hassle. As I said, I've been a long supporter of plasma ... but it's the retention issue :/titeroper

Agreed, if you want piece of mind,then lcd is great -
Both display techs have their pros and cons...just a matter of considering all the factors:
budget, lighting conditions, eco-friendliness, usage spread (gaming, dvds, bds, dstv, dstvhd) wife appreciation,aesthetics...
Basically, it takes a lot of research and then making a decision that fulfills YOUR criteria and preferences.
Now lets wait (even longer 'cause of the global slump) for OLED and all my dreams will be answered

Plasmas have always looked much more natural to my eyes - plus they had deeper blacks. Even my LG looks fantastic compared to most LCD's I've seen.

I just got (02/01/2009) a Panasonic TH-50PV80M Viera and very happy, no image retention or burn in issues at all.
I got mine for R20,499 at Tafelberg Furnishers in Green Point, Cape Town.
If 50" is to big for you get the 42" TH-42PV80M Viera (not the TH-42PV8M as it only has 1 HDMI at the back), think that they had this one for R12,499.
Very helpful salesman, moved set around to compare with other sets etc., i also took laptop to see how downloaded content played etc.
The Panasonic's also have a 4 year guarantee

The next couple of weeks should determine what the pocket can approve
I was initially going to go with this Panasonic bad boy. I'd even pretty much budgeted for it. But in the end paying close to R50k for a TV was something which I found I could not do. Especially given I am not really a videophile.
So I eventually went for the Samsung which is a PS in SA. It does the job I wanted to be done quite well I have to say.
