I was chatting to a buddy of mine and he hadn't heard of self install so i enlightened him.

Now he's a clued up computer techie and he's needing a new ADSL line - so off he goes to phone the call centre...
Only to be put on hold for 20 minutes - to be finally told "sorry your area does not support self-install - its still a trial product"

WTF - what is there to support?? Same guy plugs you into you DSLAM and there LESS staff needed for the installation. Where do Telkom come up with this garbage?

I phoned Telkom to enquire about "self install" on behalf of a client, and after holding on the line for over 20 minutes, I got through to an operator who told me that the waiting period for 'self install" is approximately 4 weeks in that particular area!!!To cap it all, you still pay to do the installation.

It seems that this is no more than a gimmick.

think they only let u do a self-install if the area has huge backlogs of waiting orders. theres no such thing as your area doesnt support it. if telkom can get your 404 bucks theyre going to! Seems right now they would rather have you wait months than let you get away with no installation fee  i tried to do a self-install, and after a month of waiting i got a call from a techie on a sunday afternoon telling me that i cant do a self-install but he can come install it for me right now, dodge.com...
