Hey guys

Please help me out here. I know my way around the computer and setting up home networks, however, I have never setup an ADSL connection before. It does seem very basic though, however I seem to be missing a hardware part.

I managed to get a Siemens Gigaset 762 SX modem (http://www.telkom.co.za/products_se...emens Giga Quick_install guide_29_07_2008.pdf), and want to use this to connect to ADSL (got me one of those Afrihost free 1GB accounts). I wanted to test it at work after hours and thought it will be as basic as unplugging the adsl from our work Netgear modem and plugging it into the Siemens modem, but the Netgear takes a normal telephone connection where the ADSL connection on the Siemens modem needs a RJ45 connection. (I'm guessing it has something to do with ADSL2 compatibility?)

I see on the Siemens modem's box they mention the splitter that need to be used, I however don't have this part as the guy I got it from seem to have lost it. Have been to 3 computer shops but no-one knows what I'm talking about. Everyone is trying to sell me a filter.

Can someone please just tell me if I'm missing something or tell me where I can buy this splitter? Going crazy here. The one guy at the computer shop suggested wiring a cable so that it converts from RJ11 to RJ45 - will this maybe work?

When telkom install your adsl they put in what's called a POTS filter. From there one line goes to your ADSL router and the other line to your telephone.

The Siemens 762SX MUST have an RJ11 port as well, and it should be connected just the same as the Netgear ADSL modem.

You CANNOT plug in the telephone cable (even if it goes through a filter) into a RJ45 socket!

You can get a POTS splitter filter from Telkom Direct shops for like under R50. Just make sure that if you get one that it has both ADSL and Telephone ports on the one side, and not 2x Telephone ports.

Thanks, but isn't the line going from the POTS filter to modem a normal phone line? The router I have need a LAN cable input for the ADSL.

Then it is just a router and not a modem...

After looking at the manual it seems that this router requires a different splitter/filter than the standard POTS filter. The obvious thing to do would be to contact Telkom and ask them?

Hi, I have that exact same router. The telephone line goes into the PSU, from there you cable and connect it to the router wich has a RJ45 plug at the end. BUT, I accidently with out looking what I was doing pluged the normal telephone line into the RJ45 port and the internet worked 100%. Obviously it will not fit like it should, there is a space on either side of the port of about 1mm mabe. But it still works. :-)

OK, so it appears that the Siemens 762SX that Telkom sells has an RJ45 port for the ADSL connection! WTH is up with that!

Like Xion said, you can simply plug in the normal RJ11 plug into the RJ45 port and it should work.

Okay awesome! I didn't think it would be that easy. Will wait till later and give it a shot.

Ya for someone who has never setup an adsl connection this was rather confusing.

LMAO! Typical Telkom

Thanks guys, seems to be working! Posting this with the new setup now.

You could just attach an RJ-45 plug to the end of your telephone cable, you only need the middle 2 of the 4 on the RJ-11 plug connected to the middle 2 on the RJ-45. Doesn't matter which way round either as telephone lines are not polarized.

It's not a design fault, it's made for EU / UK specification where their post-DEMARC data equipment uses a cat-5 vibe. in the modem box you should have also received the appropriate RJ11 converter cables (black & green)
