where is my photos

Ok, so I wanted to download the photos off my 8GB SD card as I usually do. I put it into my card reader and browse to the folder with my photos on. Press ctrl + a, copy it and paste it in a folder on my desktop. Windows says it cannot read from source location. When I go back to the SD card, all the photos are gone and there is one file containing some special characters and with no extension. I plug it out and back in again, the file is still there, no photos. It is about the size off all the photos together. Has this happened to anyone before??? I am running win 7 with kaspersky internet security. I am ruling out a virus! Got a canon 450D with sandisk 8GB extreme SD card. Where has my photos disappeared too???

yup happened to me the other day, my friend whos wedding it was wasn't to happy luckly I wasn't the hired shooter. unfortunately I didn't find a way to recover them so had to format the drive. I believe its quite common and a lot of pro photographers recommend backing up photos onsite ie. at the photo shoot to prevent this.

Before you abandon all hope try some recovery software. RescuePRO, which comes with many Sandisk cards, is particularly good.

Better yet, use the USB cable and copy them off the camera.

If you have space issues get a EyeFi Card and copy them to your mobile devices (phone/tablet/netbook) during shoots

I tried my favorite recovery software. Can you believe it, I recovered photos to almost a 6 months back but none of the ones from my last session...If I could just know what is the cause behind this phenomenon?
