I've managed to "archive" a few mail messages.... but can't find the archive folder...

Hmm never done it.
You using the standard mail program?
Have you tried going to the route mailbox menu?
Or for example if it is a gmail have you tried logging in online to see if the folder is there?

I did that with my iPod and it was an important email so of course I panicked 
... at least I hope we're talking about the same thing here.
My friend showed me that archived email goes to All Mail.
So when you're in the Inbox, click Mailboxes and scroll down to find All Mail. The archived emails should be in there.

Edit: The archived emails will be amongst all your other emails that feature in All Mail.
