Does anyone know where I can get information on where to buy a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop? Here's a link on the Dell website: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/x...ynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch&isredir=true

I sent Dell a message on their website and got a phone call today from Dell France. They said that they will send me information on various models and channel partners or something. I told them that i'm only interested in buying the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop. They then spoke some crap about it not being cost effective to sell me a single custom build machine. I realised that it was pointless arguing the fact that it's not a custom build but a standard item on their website. The guy I spoke to was French and even though he was very polite, didn't seem particularly bright. I still haven't received that information they told me about.

If anyone here has contact details for a Dell reseller that could provide me with pricing and availability of this laptop, I would appreciate it.

I finally received a quote from a South African based Dell reseller. Unfortunately, it was for the non-Developer Edition XPS 13. I requested a quote for the Developer Edition and received another phone call from France today stating that the Dell XPS 13 Developer Editon laptop is not available in emerging countries. This means that importing one privately will probably be the best option for someone that requires this specific machine.

I know this is an old thread, and sorry for posting on it now, but did you ever go ahead and import one? I have been looking all over for a local reseller of these. Another thought that occurred to me is to just purchase the xps with Windows and install linux myself, but do you know if the hardware of the 2 are exactly the same?

Just looked at the Dell site. It seems that the developer version still ships with Ubuntu 12.04. There may be some merit to installing 14.04 on a regular XPS instead, either directly or as a VM. It is unlikely that we will benefit locally from the lower price of the developer version versus the regular XPS.

I agree regarding the price, there will be no benefit, but the benefit for me is purchasing a computer with Linux pre-installed, that way, when you have hardware support issues of any sort, you can get support from the supplier, because they cannot just shrug and say "Sorry, you installed Linux, we cannot gauruntee hardware compatibility, only with Windows."

Not that it is a huge deal, but would be nice.

No. Dell don't bring it in and even Tech Import couldn't help me. A pity really because having a quality laptop like the XPS 13 with official Ubuntu support from Dell would have been fantastic.

That is unfortunate. Thanks for the answer though.

It looks great, also, they say that there will be low price options, but still good specs. Sadly, I have a feeling it will be a while before this hits our shores.

I am also quite happy to see it still comes with a non-touch screen option, however it seems you will have to give up some screen resolution.

apologies for derailing this thread:
Like the new xps 13 laptop and looking to order one.
http://www.dell.com/za/p/xps-13-9343-laptop/pd

how does one go about ordering from dell directly - I see there is no online shop here.
Do they only take orders through resellers, if so - can anyone recommend a good one?

You can try asking Wootware. They stock the current XPS line.

The new one has just been released so we may have to wait before they appear locally.

Hi sorry to revive this topic. I wanted to order the new dell xps 15 from the USA. It gonna be 1100 usd but I know for a fact that when or of it comes out here it will retail at probably +28000 and that's with Raru importing service.... :(. Could you tell me what dell reseller did you contact so I can contact them too. Is there any service for someone to import the laptop for me? When you said even tech did u mean ever tech? They have an importing service? Thanks so much!

Seems like the 2020 XPS 13 with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is coming to SA.

So you save about $100? That's not too bad. However....

I have yet to see a "customised" XPS 13 for sale in SA. Everyone just sells one of the 4 default configurations.
The company I work for allows us to buy directly from Dell through them, and when I tried to buy from them so that I can configure the laptop how I wanted, it was about 50% more expensive than what Flashgear asked for a higher spec.

What's the deal with the developer edition? From the outset it just looks like an XPS 13 with Ubuntu on it.

Can't you just get an XPS 13" and install Ubuntu?

Sometimes it's a different WiFi card compared to the Windows version, other times it's also custom drivers as well as a custom kernel. This time I'm not sure of the differences but here's a link to Ubuntu.com showing the XPS 13 9300's certification info: https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201910-27449

It's the same thing with Linux instead of windows.
