Just an idea? What about one of those Thuraya sattelite phone jobs.
Might be a bit cheaper than a R5000 GSM Amplifier.
Although a satelite phone might not be as portable as a Cellphone.

<edit> I remember an Advert for a GSM / Satellite phone. When outside GSM coverage it switches to Satellite. Was quite portable as well.

Apparently it is...

From the chaps at www.poynting.co.za:

Unfortunately we do not have repeaters on offer. Currently only the network providers can transmit on the GSM frequencies as they have paid for the license to do so.

cjh, what range are you looking at?

If it's only to use around the house, get a telular cellphone and connect a ordinary cordless phone to it. This works great and is not that expensive.

A friend or mine has a repeater in his house but the range is very limited, does not even cover the whole house and cost about R3000. Can get you a contact number if still interested.

Yeah, that's what my father-in-law wants to do, but my motives aren't entirely selfless.

When I visit the farm I want to be able to just hook up my GPRS like normal, without swapping phones and sim cards and what-have-you.

R3k is a bit steep, so I guess I'll keep doing the big swap.

Thanks for the input, though!
