Hi people!

Unfortunately my computer died this week, but this just gives me the perfect excuse to buy a new desktop.

I am looking for a good high-end configuration but I don't want to buy something "off-the-shelf" since I prefer to pick and choose my own components and specs.

I dont want to be ripped off by the high-priced fancy shops but I also dont want to be taken for a ride by some fly-by-night garage operation.

Can anyone recommend where I can get reliable service and good value for money?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers! :D

Find somebody with a Rectron account that will let you use it to purchase direct and then assemble it yourself. Only problem with this is you have to pay Rectron cash and they give no installation support, will only replace faulty components.

Well unfortunately I just recently moved to South Africa and I dont know a lot of people in the IT business, much less anyone specifically with a Rectron account, so I guess I cant go down that route... any other suggestions?

If you are in CT I would recommend Chaos Computers, or if you want to buy online try www.take2.co.za.. I normally buy from them when I don't use my mate's Rectron account *cough*

Sorry guys, I had to step outside for a bit.

ok, some answers:

MaD, undfortunately I am not in CT (although I wish I could be ;) ) I am based in Pretoria, but thanks for the link, I will check out take2.co.za

killadoob, JNB is close enough, are you a dealer or retailer? Send me a PM if you can. Thanks :)

rburley, see above :) I'm in Pretoria.

Cheers!

Thanks Dominic, I guess "IF" is the predominant factor here ;)

I'll check out those links as well.

Thanks again!

If there are no decent computer suppliers in PTA(which i am sure there are) dont be scared to buy from out-of-town. Getting stuff sent is piss easy these days and cheap

Nope, I dont have a problem buying out-of-town if the supplier is reliable. I am also not afraid to get my hands dirty and build it myself, since I have done it before (long time ago though).

The thing is I dont know who are the "decent computer suppliers in PTA", since I just moved here a few months ago.

Just out of interest..how much are you looking to spend?

It really depends on the components. I dont have a problem spending the money if I get my money's worth. I have a very good idea about component prices because a friend of mine is a very big distributor and wholesaler in North America. I know I probably wont get those prices here, but I also dont want to end up paying a 10-20% profit mark-up which would be obscene if you know what the international standards are.

well im sure we could help you decide on what to get. Whats ur budget and what you need it 4?

Oliver, i tend to buy my PCs and directly related hardware from ComputersOnly (Kyalami) and I don't mind the drive there. Stuff that I can't quickly source from them (I want it and I want it now), I pay PC Gaming World in Menlyn a visit. Bought my racing wheel from them. Rest of the places in Pta I couldn't be bothered with

er can we just get back to basics here? What exactly happened to your pc? surely it's just one component, possibly your motherboard, your CPU (I doubt)? Why not figure out what went wrong first then replace as necessary?

Get new mobo use old CPU/components then upgrade as necessary

my two cents worth anyway.

I like Naked IT and I like www.soholink.co.za but I prefer buying from overseas

well at the moment im kinda busy with my other sales job, but phone or go www.btgames.co.za

really nicely priced place
i bought 100 cd's from them because its cheaper than going to rectron 185 for 100 cd is a damn good price

Even though the customization is not as extensive as with the US website, you can customize certain models from DELL South Africa on their local website.

Ok this is roughly what I would like to get as a bare minimum:

Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.xx GHz) with Hyper-Threading Technology, 1066 MHz FSB and 925XE Chipset
1GB (1 x 1GB or 2 X 512MB) Dual Channel DDR2 (533Mhz or 667MHz)
60GB (at least) Serial ATA HD (10000 or 15000RPM)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra or GeForceTM 7800 GTX

Other components (e.g. sound card, additional drives, etc.) are not an immediate priority.

As I said before, budget is not really an issue if I can get a fair price for these specs.

The problem is that I have been having problems finding these components in SA, since not everyone has them in stock.

Thanks Luke, unfortunately ComputersOnly doesnt have all the components I need and although PC Gaming World has a good selection I think they are a bit pricey.

The PC that died is my old laptop (it was 3 yrs old but still very good), so I needed to get a more robust desktop anyway since you can only upgrade laptops to a certain point and then no more. I can always get the laptop fixed for when I travel, but I still need a desktop.

The problem with buying overseas is that you end up paying double VAT don't you?

I really don't like Dell South Africa because of their VERY limited (local) selection. I mean I cant even get a Dimension desktop if I wanted to!

Although Dell's prices can be quite competitive, I find that their customisation options are also very limited, for example, only in the US can you get a 10000 rpm or faster HD :(

Thank you all for your tips and recommendations. If you have more, keep them coming :) I'll also keep looking around!

Cheers!

No prob. PCGW *is* a bit expensive. Don't let CO's pricelist or website mislead you. When I built my pc, only the case was listed on the site. I sent them a mail with what I wanted and that's what I got
