Hi All

I would like to offer some work to the experienced graphic designers and web developers out there. I am an experienced full stack web developer which is currently freelancing and I have too much work to do, I need help so would like to get involved with like-minded people that can help me to make things happen.

I do not specifically want or need someone who has both design and development skills, if you are good at design and graphics then that is one thing. If you have skills in relation to web development then that is something else too. If you by some stroke of luck have both then that is awesome too.

Some of the tasks at hand for the graphics side include sourcing stock images for relative content, processing these stock images so that they will work best for web. Creating logos, flat info graphics and icons. Conceptualise and design layouts / mock up a wire frame for front and back end GUI. Brand identity and stationary design. There is more but that is the gist of it. You have someone to work with on these things if you want as well.

Some of the tasks at hand for the development would be creating bootstrap templates for the design layouts / mockups; you need a strong knowledge of bootstrap, creating and integrating various components with jQuery to cater for given requirements, if you understand PHP well then there are other things that could be done which I will not discuss here. Creating web based SPA's with ember or angular, creating and maintaining some node applications, a good knowledge of the Sails framework would be great.

Please PM me if you feel that you could assist!

I'm actually currently upskilling myself to be a full stack web developer.
The course I'm doing specifically covers technologies like bootstrap, angular, ionic, cordova and nodejs. It does not cover PHP, but I'll find another course for that when I'm done with my current ones - I'm also learning game development (as well as big data analyses on the side). I'm guessing given my 15+ years' dev experience (mostly as a backend dev), it'll be relatively easy to pick up these new skills.

If there are any other courses you can recommend to help me round out my web development skills, I'd appreciate it.

Regarding the freelance work, it's still early days in my web tuition, but I'll be in touch with you in 6 or so months' time ;)

Hi Sodan

That is good, I would have picked bootstrap and jQuery to start only because many of the components that one would make use of on the front end are made with jQuery. Angular is pretty cool... I've taken a liking for ember though, just find it gels more with my own way of thinking... Easier to understand and work with if you have a solid grasp on MVC concepts (my opinion).

Nodejs, Cordova
You are on the right track here, Node is awesome. Cordova is awesome, I see this as a common requirement for mobile development jobs too.

As far as courses go... Not really, sitepoint premium is well worth its money as there is a heap of knowledge in there if you ever need a quick start on a new technology. I read a good amount of books, the best are the ones written by the major contributors, research books based on this.

You should check out Aurelia too, really!

Keep me updated with your progress then :)

Hi Rickster

Meet up or online?
I am quite talented, I work remotely... Enjoy working with people who are able to make things work like that too.

If you know what to do and what you are doing then you can get on with your job right? And if you need to be in the same room as me to make that happen then sorry but you're only going to slow me down :)

Hi Ghoti, freelancer is cool and everything but i'll be honest in saying that i've never had much luck on that platform hey. Make a project for like 70k and then its 16 companies in India that all respond with the same rate of 71k and a generic who ha...

Who do you recommend then?

Who do you recommend then?

Check out https://hackhands.com/

I joined there when it had about 1.4k members, met one cool developer that lives in a country that borders Russia and he's helped me with a few things since then, we've kept in contact. That was one positive thing...

Made a few dollars using it too (not a lot) however I havn't had time for it in some months now, looking again it's growing fast and surely will end up in the same situation like all of the big platforms with the problems that exist there.

The biggest problem for me is that when freelancing, those paying for the work don't want to pay much. You could be light years better than the other people bidding on jobs but in most cases the payer will go with the cheapest offer. When you pit yourself against Indian devs their price is generally a lot lower than yours as their cost of living is a lot lower.

If you are doing it via word of mouth and not on an online platform or you happen to come across someone on the net then it seems like most payers immediately jump to R100 an hour, maybe R150 if you lucky. This was fine for me about 5-6 years ago when I had 2 years of experience and wanted to earn extra cash but I often get the same "clients" coming back to me wanting me to work for R100 p/h or a project that will take months to complete for R5000. They always seem really shocked when I turn them down.

Anyway, if you want to find quality freelancers make sure you are charging the client a decent amount so you can pay freelancers a decent amount as well as make some money for yourself.

With the Rand Dollar as it is, freelancing is quite attractive on the US sites.

One of my staff pulled in 4k a month with a few regulars and a few hours a month. If you have a decent portfolio you can pull as much as $50 per hour.

Since I lost him, I pay up to $60 per hour for someone that knows wtf they doing.
